Who hasn’t dreamed of owning a Mercedes-Benz SL? Sleek, sophisticated and suave, the Mercedes SL gets the job done—no problem. Thing is, Benz be charging huge for the svelte two-seater. Still, that doesn’t mean you have to pass on getting a smooth two-seat folding hardtop roadster with a three pointed star in its grille. OK, here’s the God’s honest truth; if Porsche’s engineering team were to ever endow Boxster and Cayman with the same amount of power routinely lavished upon 911, the mid-engined Porsche cars would run off and leave their storied sibling without a second thought. Racing along a twisting mountain road in either Porsche model is an experience more akin to riding a magic carpet than driving a car. They track like slot cars and they’re so smooth you’re tempted to get out and look to see if they’re really touching the ground. Pricing starts at $51,400 for Boxster, $52,600 for Cayman.
Bottom line, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with having a mid-life crisis—as long as you act upon it in a responsible way. If you’re after the car of your dreams, and the six-figure exotic you really want is out of reach, something here will scratch that itch.
