Big cars should equal big trunks, or at least that used to be how things shook out before safety, styling, and platform sharing clouded the automotive market.  Today you'll still find that cars with the biggest trunks also tend to be full-size models, but there are always a few surprises out there offering gaping cargo holds where one would expect only modest capacity.

We've put together a list of 10 cars with the biggest trunks for 2015 to try and sort out which cars walk the walk and which ones only look like they're packing the cubes you need to haul an entire family's worth of gear.  Let's take a quick look at each of them, in no particular order, and see how they shake out.

01. 2015 Audi A7

The 2015 Audi A7 is a large luxury car with a secret, and that secret is its hatchback design.  Unlike a traditional sedan, the Audi A7's rear glass lifts up, up, and away when it comes time to access the trunk, revealing a truly enormous storage space.  Not only is the A7 (and its S7 and RS7 clones) capable of hauling around 24.5 cubic feet of cargo, but folding down the rear seats opens up an even vaster amount of room for luggage.  Finally, the Audi's trunk is carved out in such a way that it facilitates the loading of oversized items such as golf bags without any hassle.

02. 2015 BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe

The 2015 BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe is a bit of a ringer here on our list of cars with the biggest trunks, because at the outset its 12 cubic feet of cargo room don't seem all that impressive.  Like the A7, however, the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe happens to be a hatchback, and that allows it to overcome its compact platform to deliver a truly outstanding 49.5 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seats folded forward.  That's nearly as much as what the much larger BMW X6 has to offer, and while you'll have to sacrifice a couple of passenger spots to take advantage of it, it's a noteworthy performance from the small car.

03. 2015 Ford Taurus

The 2015 Ford Taurus is the first traditional full-size sedan to make our list of the 10 cars with the biggest trunks, and it does so the old fashioned way: by living large.  The heftiest car in the Ford stable, the Taurus comes through with a trunk that measures 0.1 cubes over 20 cubic feet, which makes it the most capacious gas-powered sedan on the market.  The Ford Taurus also enjoys a respectable amount of interior room to go with its luggage-hauling capability, making it an appealing road trip companion.

04. 2015 Tesla Model S

Notice how we said 'gas-powered' when referring to the Ford Taurus' cargo carrying lead?  That's because the 2015 Tesla Model S manages to surpass the Ford with its 26.3 cubic feet of trunk space - a figure made possible in part by its all-electric design, which obviates the need to eat up storage room with fuel tank placement at the rear of the vehicle.  Not only is the hatch-like cargo area of the Tesla Model S so large as to feature the option of a rear-facing third row of seating, but there's also an additional 5.3 cubic feet to be found under the front hood, replacing the area where a traditional combustion engine would sit.

05. 2015 Lincoln MKS

The 2015 Lincoln MKS is a bit of a puzzler when it comes to evaluating the size of its trunk.  This full-size luxury car is based on the same platform as the Ford Taurus, which would make you think that it, too, would offer a generous 20.1 cubic feet of cargo space.  At least half of that expectation is right - the Lincoln MKS' trunk is indeed 'generous' - but it measures in at a slightly smaller 18.7 cubes, creating an unusual gap between the Ford and the Lincoln that isn't easily explained by packaging or style.  Similar discrepancies can be found throughout the Ford and Lincoln platform-sharing line-up, with the most notable difference existing between the square-shaped Flex and more-rounded MKT full-size crossovers.

06. 2015 BMW 5 Series GT

The 2015 BMW 5 Series GT is another stealth hatchback that squeaks onto our list of cars with the biggest trunks only to explode when it comes time to harvest the extra storage space that its unique design makes available.  There's 17.7 cubic feet of cargo room available when the BMW 5 Series GT is carrying a full load of passengers, but kick everyone out of the second row, fold down those seats, and you're up to a whopping 62 cubic feet in total.  That's mid-size SUV-levels of storage, making the 5 Series GT the most practical car in the BMW line-up.

fallback

07. 2015 Jaguar XF

The 2015 Jaguar XF is an unusual choice when combing the British luxury brand's line-up for the biggest trunk.  After all, one would think that the Jaguar XF, being a mid-size offering, would fall in line behind the larger XJ full-size or XJL extended-wheelbase sedans, but in fact the XF's 17.7 cubic feet of capacity stands a couple of cubes greater than that offered by its bigger brothers.  Blame a smaller backseat for the differential, as the XJ offers reams of legroom and headroom as compensation for its slightly tighter trunk.

08. 2015 Cadillac XTS

The 2015 Cadillac XTS is intended to serve luxury car shoppers seeking a more traditional take on what a large full-size sedan has to offer, and that includes not just a comfortable ride but also the ability to take it all with you when trundling down to a warm weather state to wait out the winter months.  The Cadillac XTS offers a full 18 cubic feet of cargo space inside its big trunk, which is a good four cubes greater than what one would find inside the next-in-line Cadillac CTS's storage area.

09. 2015 Chevrolet Impala

The 2015 Chevrolet Impala uses a full-size platform that has more than a passing relationship with that underpinning the Cadillac XTS so it's no surprise that it, too, offers a respectably large trunk.  There's even a bit of a bonus for storage-hungry sedan shoppers who opt for the more affordable Chevrolet Impala over the XTS, as the Bowtie-wearing four door's 18.8 cubic feet of space betters the Cadillac's measure by 0.8 cubic feet.  The rear seats also fold down in the Impala, which is useful when hauling long items such as skis or snowboards.

10. 2015 Lexus LS

The lone Japanese entry on our list of cars with the biggest trunks is the 2015 Lexus LS.  The largest automobile in the Lexus line-up, the Lexus LS trumps full-size luxury models like the previously-mentioned Jaguar XJ as well as the BMW 7 Series by virtue of its 18 cubic feet of cargo space.  The LS manages to achieve this even with the long-wheelbase LS 460 L model, which tacks on enormous amounts of rear seat room and comfort for those who prefer to be driven, rather than drive themselves.
