What Is Volvo DRIVE-E?

Volvo DRIVE-E are a series of small but powerful engines and powertrains. The four cylinder engines offer performance similar to six or even eight cylinder engines, while still offering good fuel economy. The S60, V60, and XC60 are available with one of a pair of 2.0 liter DRIVE-E engines, a turbocharged T5 engine that makes 245 HP or a turbocharged and supercharged T6 that makes 306 HP. The supercharger adds low RPM power, complimenting the high RPM power of the turbocharger and giving the feel of a much larger naturally aspirated engine. Both engines are backed by an 8-speed automatic transmission, and offer better fuel economy and reduced emissions than their predecessor’s. In some markets a D4 diesel DRIVE-E engine is also available. This engine is also a 2.0 liter four cylinder, and shares a number of parts with its gasoline counterpart. All of the DRIVE-E engines are designed to be ready for electrification in future hybrid models, the first of which should be the XC90, where the powertrain should be good for somewhere around 400 HP when both the gasoline and electric motors are combined.
