Audi's electronic stabilization program (or ESP) is a system designed to keep the vehicle under control in extreme situations. The system is particularly useful in slippery conditions. Depending on the vehicle, a combination of the Anti-lock Braking (ABS), Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD), traction control (ASR), Electronic Differential Lock (EDL) and other systems work to keep the car safely in control at the limit.
The system is tuned specifically for the vehicle on which it is installed. SUVs get a more conservative system while S and RS models get a more performance-oriented system. Some Audi SUVs come with an off-road mode while others automatically change the system when the roof rack is in use to compensate for the change in the vehicle's center of gravity. Some versions of the system also include a dry brake function that intermittently applies the brakes in order to dry the pads and rotors, reducing wet brake distances.
