Pros: ergonomics, appointments, overall design
Cons: stereo controls, super compact size
Advice: Should have been on Car and Driver's 10Best. Wait for AWD in 2005.The turbo-charged five cylinder is incredibly spirited. The handling is assured if stiff. The quality built into this car is evident. The problem? The car is tiny and the price tage is big.
Pros: Price, sturdiness, engine power, safety features
Advice: Get one!Just purchased one. Call me crazy, but I've owned a BMW 525i and 530i, and currently drive a porsche boxster, and I do prefer the Volvo S40 over the BMWs.....not the Porsche though...The Volvo is a great car and car company!
Pros: Best lloking wagon out there.
Cons: Not as sporty as advertised.
Advice: IF you can afford the T5 do it. If you are tall look elsewhereWe have 6000 Km on our 2005 2.4i 5speed. Sporty might be too strong a word but it has a premium euro feel at thousands less than BMW or Audi. Excellent safty features, relaxed quite and fule efficient long distance car for a small wagon. Volvo seats and good mileage mean 600 KM stints are easy. Cornering with the sport package is confident but not the kind of thing that begs for a race track. the 2.4 l 5 has a flat power band but can be uninspired if you end up a gear too high. Don't test drive the t5 unless you have no intention of geting a 2.4 you'll always bewanting the t5.
Pros: The turbo
Cons: Poor visability, lousy turning circle
Advice: Check the S80 first and then decideGreat zip...but terrible visability.
Pros: Hidden storage behind rear seats!
Cons: Great, echoing space behind front console -- tres avant-garde, non?
Advice: Don't drive unless you're ready to buy, or suffer from Mad Car Lust for months...This car is swift, quiet, and sure-footed. It might be smaller inside than the family's XC-70, but is worlds ahead of the former model (I once got wedged in the back seat of one at a dealership -- no sale!). Love the high-tech console. Great seats. Prices are in line with the market (if you want cheap, go drive a Toyota). As others have noted, don't drive it if you don't want to buy. It's that good.
Pros: The all-auto windows
Advice: Don't let the small size fool youI've had it 3 weeks and it is awesome! Only a minor problem with the ABS wheel sensor, but the dealer took care of it and supplied a loaner (in Ontario, CA). Great safety features w/no extra $. Turbo is very quick with no torque steer and the A/T is a must have option! Comes with full scheduled maint. I am told they will replace the brakepads when this period is up. No complaints!!
Pros: T5 engine
Cons: Small interior
Advice: Test drive the S40 before you decide on another vehicle. This car is fun, exciting, and above all a Volvo. Safety and style are all you need to know about this slick little car. I have enjoyed every mile I have put on this auto.
