Getting firsthand information from an actual car owner is one sure way to get an idea of car performance once it leaves the lot. Autobytel features real consumer reviews that give the unbiased experience of a car.
Pros: All wheel drive handling and acceleration
Advice: Buy itThe car is a well-kept secret. It has fantastic acceleration, and tremendous handling especially into the curves. The seats are supple and give excellent supoort. I have the premium sound system, and there is no distortion even when cranked up high. I recommend this vehicle unequivocally as the all wheel drive traction lets you blow by the Germans and Asian cars with impunity.
Pros: The outside look of the car
Cons: the lack of power
Advice: Consider the fact that you will be tied to the dealership for every maintenance issueThis car lacks the power and reliability that the price would suggest. You cannot get the oil changed anywhere but a dealership because the oil filters are not available in the after market. The shifting is rough for an automatic and there are documented issues with the fuel system. Overall the car is a dissapointment and a testament to the new Volvo's.
Pros: The styling
Advice: Test drive with big shoes onI have a feeling i just got a 'lemon' but i am very unhappy with my V50. My wife was pregnant and we decided to trade in the VW Golf for a safe and reliable family car. We loved the styling and was very impressed with the interior of the car. We have had the car for just under a year and less than 5000 miles and its been to the shop four times now. Three times i just died in my driveway and we had to get it towed to the dealer. The most recent was because the defroster stopped working during the worst rainstorm. Some other things to note. If anyone has a shoe size greater than 12, forget about wearing shoes while driving. I have a size 13 and i have to take my right shoe off if i drive otherwise my foot gets stuck between the break and the gas pedal. The visibility is also poor in the car. Being that its so solid, everything is thick, so its hard to see. Again, i just might have gotten unlucky with my v50
Advice: have a god jobsporty
Pros: The Stereo, Seats, Looks, Too many to list
Cons: Turning radius
Advice: Drive both with and with out sport package. The sport package is a blast!Beautiful car! Graceful yet sporty! Solid, firm. I have had an Audi, Jaguar, Acura, Subaru. This car fits all the your wants and needs and more. Hope the Volvo for life means it not only lasts a long time but that all your future auto purchases will be Volvos!
Cons: Standard Engine
Advice: A nice vehicle that is fun to drive and looks good.As a first time Volvo buyer I am impressed with the style, fit and finish of the S40. The new rounded front end is a nice break from the box style of the past. With gas close to $3 a gallon I went for the standard engine package which is nice but tame the auto stick shift helps it respond better but for real performance I suggest the turbo. The inside is compact but the $3,000 interior upgrade package including leather, wood, sound system, sun roof, etc. is very nice. Commuter trips are by myself, I find the Volvo able to meet this need with style and comfort.
Pros: Stereo system
Cons: back seats
Advice: Buy it without regret....I have 15000 miles in my v50. It's a great machine. I bought it in Sept 2004 and I enjoy it every time, It feels new every day. It has lots of room in the back, beautiful interior design, good power and overall road handling. I like the key design. Tight seats in the back is the only drawback. I love this car.
