Getting firsthand information from an actual car owner is one sure way to get an idea of car performance once it leaves the lot. Autobytel features real consumer reviews that give the unbiased experience of a car.
Pros: 30mpg ++ with 1.8 turbo engine.
Cons: No auto dimming rear view mirror in GLS trim
Advice: Buy the automatic & leather package.1.8T engine gives good power & mileage with the tiptronic automatic. Comfortable & quite ride. Handles very well.
Pros: Subtle nature of Performance/Styling
Cons: Lack of trunk capacity due to AWD components
Advice: Consider the Sport Package for it's improved suspension.I looked at purchasing a 2002 Passat W8 but decided to wait until the 2003 model arrived with the available Sport Package which transformed this car in a real 'Sports Sedan', the equal of much more expensive offerings in this market group. I compared it to the Lexus and Mercedes, which did not offer the same features, and finally to the Audi A6 4.2L V8 quattro, which I found to be very similar in features and function, but the Passat was $15K less money, making it an easy choice. I have owned the car for 6 months and am delighted with the performance, handling, and firm but supple ride qualities. I am averaging in excess of 20 MPG, which is an unexpected bonus considering my agressive driving style. I did upgrade to the Michelin Pilot Sport A/S tires which made the car much more tractable in virtually all situations. The interior and exterior fit and finish is superb making this a very well rounded vehicle.
Pros: The value, $250 above invoice for newly ordered '03 out of Germany.
Cons: My wife drive's it, I get stuck with my BMW.
Advice: Buy the GLX, it's totally loaded with options! My wife and I tested exclusively European Sport Wagons and the VW Passat Wagon came to the top. This car drives like a dream. It's quiet, powerful and handles great. This car has a fit and finish that might be paralleled by the Mercedes, but I doubt it. The transmittion is great and the V6 is silky smooth with a good amount of torque across a wide RPM range. The leather is like butter, simply beautiful in two tone against the dash. Very tasteful design across the board. We like the cargo space but could always use more room it seems. We opted for front wheel drive and are happy as it has more space than the 4 motion. Don't buy an Audi A4 Avant when you can buy it in disguise in the VW for a fraction of the price.
Pros: Seats adjust to me!
Cons: Not as quick as my Passat sedan was...sniff
Advice: Drive it.I traded a Passat V6 FWD sedan for this V6 AWD wagon. The car seems heavier (well. it is) and does not accelerate as quickly. But it handles beautifully and is rock-solid. The auto tranny shifts so smoothly that it's hardly noticeable without looking at the tach. It certainly has enough power to do what you need it to do -- it's just a little less rabbity.
Pros: Looks and handling.
Cons: High initial cost.
Advice: Just drive it!The finest car for the money that I've driven. It looks great and the engineering is typically top notch. My wife initially wasn't interested in buying one because she didn't like the name. After she took it for a test drive, the name no longer mattered.
Pros: AUTO/MAN SHIFTING
Cons: FINE TUNING ON RADIO STICK OUT-EASY TO MESS UP
Advice: PAY FOR IT IN CASHAFTER MY WIFE HAD DRIVEN A TOYOTA CAMARY FOR 13 YEAR THIS IS LIKE BEING IN A DREAM
Pros: Seat warmers
Cons: manual seats, already got a door ding...not as 'solid' as my last car
Advice: Go for it! Affordable, great options, very roomie!LOVE my new car! It drives like a dream.
