Following in the tire tracks of cars like the Dodge Challenger Hellcat, Chevy Camaro Z/28 and the Ford Mustang 50th Anniversary Edition, the first 2015 Volkswagen Golf EV offered in this country will be crossing the auction block for charity.

Of course, VW is taking a slightly different approach from that used by the modern-day muscle cars: Instead of relying on a big auction house, the automaker is working with Charity Buzz, an online charity-auction site that is showcasing the 2015 Volkswagen Golf EV at www.CharityBuzz.com/vwegolf. Bidding will remain open until Oct. 29, 2014, at 3:30 p.m. (ET), with proceeds going to Global Green USA, a non-profit organization dedicated to "fostering a global value shift toward a sustainable and secure future."

As for the 2015 Volkswagen Golf EV, it pitches in toward that goal with an expected all-electric driving range of between 70-90 miles, standard fast-charging capability that enable an 80 percent charge in about 30 minutes and net pricing below $28,000. (The MSRP of the "e-Golf" is $35,445, but the car qualifies for the U.S. government's $7,500 tax credit, among others.)

Said Les McCabe, president and CEO of Global Green USA: “We applaud Volkswagen’s commitment to developing a vehicle that is both sustainable and affordable. While climate change is undeniable, we now have zero-emission vehicle options that allow us to collectively mitigate its impact.”

Added Michael Horn, president and CEO of Volkswagen Group of America: “We’re excited to mark the launch of our first all-electric car with an auction that raises funds and awareness for Global Green USA’s groundbreaking work to bring smart, sustainable solutions to communities nationwide. The auction is now live for the public to support an important cause and to be the first proud new owner of the brand’s first electric vehicle in the U.S.”

Following the close of bidding, VW will begin offering the 2015 Volkswagen Golf EV in limited U.S. markets beginning in November.
