2006 Toyota Highlander Hybrid - FWD
Pros: Great MPG for a truck, roomier than you'd expect.
Cons: Aerodynamic design causes us to not open windows.
Advice: Toyota has become arrogant about it's pricing, beat-up the salesman good!
I have owned my Highlander hybrid for exactly one year now and I have yet to see better than 22 MPG. The mileage stated by Toyota is seriously wrong. I feel dupped. I tried driving at 60 MPH, 'coasting ' where possible, reducing air conditioning usage, premium gas, NOTHING WORKED. I can't complain too loudly, overall I'm satisfied with the vehicle. Great guts for a battery operated toy. I should note that I am unable to open only one or two windows while driving due to a fluttering sound it makes which hurts our ears, that should definetely be redesigned. -
2006 Toyota Highlander Hybrid - Limited AWD
Pros: Compact car like gas mileage in a Mid Size SUV with exceptional acceleration.
Cons: Heat/AC controls require you to take your eyes off the road to operate.
Advice: Other individuals have experienced problems with the vehical refusing to move slippery hills when will spin occurs, this may be of particlar concern if towing a trailer. 2008 Highlander Hybrid may have corrected this problem.
I have owned my Highlander Hybrid Limited 4WD since May 2006 and have but just over 10,000 miles on it. Gas milelage has been EXCELLENT at and average 28-29 MPG during the summer/fall with average speeds of 60 MPH and generally short trips (7 miles). Mileage can easily improve above 30 MPG when engine is warm during city driving (WITHOUT driving like a granny!). During the winter months (I live in the snow belt region around the Great Lakes) my average gas mileage has decreased to 24 MPG as would be expected with temperature below freezing (i.e. engine warmup is longer and engine operates more frequently). I am getting essentially the same mileage (if not marginally better) I did with my 97 Grand AM GT (3.3 litre), and definetly better mileage than any other mid-size SUV. Traction on winter roads has been excellent and the VDIM stability system is very impressive. It is however not very agile at high speeds on twisty roads and warrants some caution as would be expect from a top heavy SUV. Overall I am VERY HAPPY with my Highlander Hybrid. It should be noted that Toyota has a service bulletion greating POOR GAS MILEAGE with the Highlander Hybrid - if the 12V battery has been disconnected (which the dealer is instructed to do if the vehicle is not used for 30 days), or if voltage drops below 7 volts, the idle speed control has to be relearned (a straight forward task that could be done with out the dealer), otherwise vehicle mileage will degraded due to an non-optimum engine idle control/speed. -

I leased my 06 Toyota Hybrid in April of 06 and have consistantly gotten 23-25 mpg which is not what the sticker promised and it doesn't seem to matter whether I am driving fast or conservatively. I also wasn't told by the dealer that I wouldn't qualify for the tax credit if I leased, which is totally disappointing now that I am at tax time. -
2006 Toyota Highlander Hybrid - FWD
Pros: First, it is a hybrid. Second, the navigation system is wonderful and easy to use.
Cons: The back door opens only one way and tthe window cannot be lowered and it is heavy to lift.
Advice: The quietness overall when on but not going or going at a slow rate takes some getting used to.
Overall, I loved the vehicle. Great pickup, confortable to ride and easy to learn to use the controls. For me, the car handles a little less smoothly than I would prefer and it took me a bit to get used to the braking. -

I ordered my highlander in March 2005 and took delivery August 1st. The vehicle now has 12,500 flawless miles on it. The MPG is averaging 29.1 on long trips. the GPS system can get lost at times, but eventually find's where it is. We bought the limited and are very pleased with the appearance and handling of the vehicle. It does take off like a rocket if you need to put your foot into it. For the best MPG, very light accelerator modulation is required. Once you get used to letting the electric motors work, the milage ends up very good. -

I picked up my 2006 Toyota Hybrid Highlander in Nov of 2005.The suv drives nicely and is very comfortable. I do not have the Limited or GPS package but do have the 4X4i. I changed over to Leasing a Toyota after Leasing A Chrysler for 6 years (Two different cars). However, my biggest disappointment is the gas mileage promised. The sticker stated 31 city and 29 Highway. Well so far that has been a lot of bunk. I have about 6000 miles on my car. My average millege city and highway is between 19 to 20 miles per gallon on regular gas. I live in Staten Island N.Y. and brought my car back to the dealer twice with this problem. Each time he said there was nothing wrong with the car. I have been checking this mileage each time I fill my car with regular gas so this is not a random sampling of gas mileage. I hope the gas mileage improves for summer driving. I am a retired teacher and a very conservative driver. I would even be happy with 25 MPG.
