    2006 Mercury Mountaineer - Luxury V6 (310A) AWD

    Pros: Appealling looks

    Cons: comfort level

    Advice: Look elsewhere

This truck has probably the worst ride I have ever found. After only 20 minutes of riding, my back begins to hurt. I have owned previous SUV's and this is nothing like the others. We took it back to the dealer and swapped it for another one and it rode just as bad. The salesman did not seem surprised. He told me that everyone says that about the Explore and Mountaineers.

    2002 Mercury Mountaineer - AWD

    Pros: Look of the vehicle

Cons: All the mechanical problems with it.

Advice: Do not buy one. They have not seemed to fixed any problems with them

I have had my mountaineer for 2 years and have had nothing but problems with it.It is only a 2002 with only 89000 miles on it. I have replaced the drive shaft in it not 1 time but 2 times. The transfer case broke. I have had to replace shock & struts, ball joints and a wheel bearing/hub assembly. This vehicle is the worst I have ever had in my life.

    2007 Mercury Mountaineer - Base V6 (310A) AWD

    Pros: style

    Cons: ride,

Advice: Look at older Explorers and Mountaineer prior to 2002

I have read many reviews stating how great this truck rides. I do not agree. The suspension is too stiff. When you hit a pot hole, you, not the truck, absorb the shock. It really is great on smooth roads, but on normal roads....the worst I have seen. After 3 months we had a major transmission repair. Ford is aware of the problem and only wishes to slap a band aid on the problem and not fix it. Dealer states every Explorer and Mountaineer since 2002 has this design problem and Ford will not replace the transmissions with a better design. Do not ignore the hard shifts. You will be left on the side of the road! My wife and I were so unhappy with the Mountaineer, we demanded the Dealer buy it back and they did. Kudos to the dealer, shame on Ford!

    2007 Mercury Mariner - Luxury (320A) 4x4

    Pros: looks great

    Cons: noisey tires

Advice: test drive over different types of road surfaces

Ride is somewhat choppy and tire noise intrudes into passenger compartment....

    2002 Mercury Mountaineer - AWD

    Pros: The sound system

    Cons: The uncomfortable front seats

Advice: Don't buy for comfort, cost or low maintenance

Avg mileage good at 19.5 plastic dash area around radio discoloring; plastic strip on top edge of driver door has come loose; This week, at 76,500 miles, break pads were needed and now it appears there is either seal(s) leaking or the bearings are worn out on the rear differential est repairs $1100.00...guess I should have gotten the extended warranty; AWD and sun roof pumped up ret cost to $32,500, considering above, this was a poor vehicle choice for us but otherwise it's ok...but expected more than just 'ok' for $32,500! Our 1997 Lincoln Continental beats it hands down for comfort but it's not AWD either.

2006 Mercury Mariner Hybrid - Base

    Pros: Miles per gallon

Cons: Lack of info on hybred

Advice: Its a bit high priced

Handels well, over all I am happy with the purchace, road noise is a bit high, There is no manual available for the hybred, the seats are too firm. But those negatives are outweighed by the good milage. The milage has actually been at or above the EPA rating.

    2006 Mercury Mariner - Luxury (320A) 4x4

    Pros: The ride

    Cons: only 4 speakers

    Advice: Buy it

This is a great SUV. My wife and I test drove almost everything else in this class. We bought the Luxury 4x4 with sunroof, 6 CD changer, Leather and seat heaters. We added 20' rims.We live south of Yosimite where there is plenty of snow and it preforms like a champ.
