Getting firsthand information from an actual car owner is one sure way to get an idea of car performance once it leaves the lot. Autobytel features real consumer reviews that give the unbiased experience of a car.
Pros: The Mid Season change to the auto transmission shifter
Cons: Location of the radio antenna. It chips the rear air spoiler when the hatch is opened
Advice: Get the ABS and side airbages, they are cheap insurance. If you get a sunroof. The deflector is a must! This is a very safe vehicle when ordered with the ABS and Side Airbags. Car was struck from the rear and suffered minor ($1,800) damage. 4 months later car was broadside by a full size Ford van doing between 30 and 35 mph. Side bags worked, minor injuries Protege 5 totaled. The biggest problem was finding another Protege 5 to replace the totaled one. Best sunroof I have ever experienced, no intrustion in the passenger cabin.
Pros: The handling and the comfort, sorry I know that is two features!
Cons: A little more power under the hood, but it's no bad.
Advice: Definitely get the sunroof option, not too much else it comes with so much!I have been very, very imressed with this Mazda Protege5. The car is comfortable for 4-5 adults, the interior is extremely plush and feels like a more expensive car. When it comes to performance the car handles so much better the the other cas in its class. My only wish is for so more horsepower, which was addressed with the 2003 Mazdaspeed Protege. Mazda just needs to make it in a sport wagon model too. I have recommended a Protege5 to several friend, two of which have purchased one. They too are pleased with their decision. Thanks Mazda!
Pros: the style..the zoom - zoom
Cons: stereo and bumpy ride (a drawback on the stiff suspension)
Advice: its a sweet ride...test drive one and find out!It is one beautiful vehicle to look at ! (from any angle). it drives great, handles corners very well and fun to gun it on the highways. its a bit of a bumpy ride but you get used to it. the stereo could be better especially since your not buying a striper version of the protege. i haven't tried it out on our canadian winters yet (i've had the car for only 2 months) so i'll see how well it can handle our winter climate. but so far so good!
Pros: the 5 speed shifts wonderfully.
Cons: Finding a dealer who will not play games.
Advice: Check out multible dealers on the internet and let them bid for a lower price.Drive the Protege 5 and fall in love. Once I was able to buy the car, had some dealer problems, I have been in heaven. It drives great even in the mountains. This is my second Mazda Protege and I will buy another if Mazda keeps this car reliable.
Cons: 4 CL It would be nice to have a V6 or best V8
Advice: Look out for bad servicemen at dealership.Great handling, has perk to pass.
Pros: Braking with four wheel disc brakes
Cons: Removing rear privacy shelf when carrying large items
Advice: Don't let them promise you mud guards they're not availableI bought the Mazda Protege5 in June'01 and I love it.I haven't had to do anything to it but change the oil&filter and rotate the tires. After 9,000 miles, the car continues to be flawless.I had test driven the VWPassat and had fallen in love with it,but quite frankly didn't want to spend in the upper 20's for it. This Mazda is a lot of terrific car for the money. The handling and the configuration of the car combined with the price is what sold me. I can't wait to see and drive the '03Mazda6 Hatchback,as I wouldn't mind something a little larger. Everything I've seen and read about the Mazda6 convinces me that it will be a winner. In the meantime,I have and will continue to rave to anyone who lends an ear about the greatness of the Protege5,needless to say,all the many people that have eyed and commented on how sharp the car is.Mine by the way is silver and an automatic transmission, which I think performs extremely well.Check out this car,I think you'll be most pleasantly surprised.
Pros: Looks (Vivid Yellow)
Cons: No Mud Flaps ar made for them yet
Advice: Test DriveWhen I took my wife out for a test drive when we were looking for a car, and we had just test drove a PT Cruiser before it. When we got back to the show room, she said buy it. Since then (now this is my car mind you) she steals when ever she gets a chance and just goes out for drives. I love the way it looks outside and in. It handle like a dream and has plenty of power when you need it. I also looked at the Vibe and Matrix, but this car with the standard features. Beats out both of them hand down. The seats are very comfortable, the dash looks great and every gauge easy to read. All the controls are at you finger tips. My sugestion is test drive one, if this is the size car you are looking at. Because when you test drive it (and put it through its paces), you'll buy it
