Changes for the 2014 Toyota Camry:
Toyota adds a new SE Sport model to the 2014 Camry lineup. Otherwise, no changes are made in advance of what is expected to be a fairly significant refresh for 2015.
The 2014 Toyota Camry is sold in L, LE, SE, XLE, Hybrid LE, and Hybrid XLE trim levels. Upgrading to LE trim adds automatic headlights, variable wipers, remote keyless entry, and nicer trim. A power driver’s seat and a power sunroof are options for the Camry LE.
Choose SE trim if you’re looking for a sporty Camry. In addition to a sport-tuned suspension, the Camry SE includes aluminum wheels, fog lights, heated outside mirrors, and unique styling details. Inside, the SE has metallic trim, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and seats with SofTex leatherette bolsters and cloth inserts. New-for-2014, the SE Sport model adds 18-inch wheels, a power driver’s seat, and a power sunroof.
Compared to the Camry LE, the Camry XLE includes aluminum wheels, fog lights, heated side mirrors, fake wood interior trim, premium fabric seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, a power driver’s seat, and a power sunroof.
Hybrid models are packaged differently, with LE versions including automatic climate control, Smart Key, and unique instrumentation compared to a standard Camry LE.
Engines and Transmissions:
A 178-horsepower, 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine is standard for the 2014 Camry, paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive. As an option, the Camry SE and XLE models are offered with a 268-horsepower, 3.5-liter V-6 that feels stronger than its power rating might suggest.
The Camry Hybrid models have a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder gasoline engine, an electric assist motor, a nickel-metal hydride battery pack, and a continuously variable transmission (CVT). Together, these components generate 200 horsepower, and the Camry Hybrid can travel at low speed and for short distance solely on electricity.
Fuel Economy Ratings:
According to the EPA, the Camry’s 4-cylinder engine returns 28 mpg in combined driving, while the Camry’s V-6 gets 25 mpg. As is expected, the Camry Hybrid models are far more fuel-efficient. In LE trim, a Camry Hybrid averages 41 mpg in combined driving, while the XLE version gets 40 mpg.
In National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) crash tests, the 2014 Camry earns the highest possible overall rating of 5 stars. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) had not officially rated the 2014 Camry as this summary was written. Last year, the Camry was named a “Top Safety Pick” by the IIHS. However, the car did not perform well in the difficult new small overlap frontal-impact test, receiving a “Poor” rating in this regard.
Toyota reserves its technology upgrades for the more expensive versions of the Camry. A reversing camera, a navigation system, Smart Key passive entry with push-button starting, and Entune App Suite technology are offered for the SE, XLE, and Hybrid XLE. To get a Blind Spot Monitor and Safety Connect service, buyers must choose the top-of-the-line XLE and Hybrid XLE models.
