Changes for the 2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek:

A new XV Crosstrek Hybrid model joins the lineup for 2014, identified by its “Hybrid” badges, aerodynamic wheel design, and an exclusive Plasma Green Pearl paint color (other colors are offered). All-wheel drive is standard, and fuel-saving measures include low rolling-resistance tires, active grille shutters, and automatic stop/start technology. Additionally, this new hybrid version of the XV Crosstrek is equipped with revised suspension and steering calibration for a sportier driving feel, regenerative brakes to capture kinetic energy that would otherwise be lost while stopping the vehicle, and unique gauges that allows the driver to monitor the gas/electric drivetrain.

Model Lineup:

The 2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek is offered in 2.0i and Hybrid model series. The former provides a choice between Premium and Limited trim, while the latter is available in standard or Touring trim. The new XV Crosstrek Hybrid is priced $3,000 higher than a 2.0i Premium model equipped with a CVT, but does include automatic climate control, upgraded instrumentation and displays, keyless passive entry with push-button starting, and nicer trim inside and out.

Engines and Transmissions:

The XV Crosstrek 2.0i models have a 148-horsepower, 2.0-liter Boxer-style 4-cylinder engine. A 5-speed manual gearbox is standard, with a continuously variable transmission (CVT) optional. All-wheel drive is included for every XV Crosstrek, and the type of system used is dependent on the type of transmission selected.

The new XV Crosstrek Hybrid models combine the 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine with a unique CVT that contains an electric drive motor powered by a rechargeable nickel-metal hydride battery. Total system output measures 160 horsepower, and the XV Crosstrek Hybrid includes paddle shifters on the steering wheel.

Fuel Economy Ratings:

Equipped with its standard manual gearbox, the XV Crosstrek 2.0i gets 26 mpg in combined driving. Choose the optional CVT, and that number jumps to 28 mpg. The new 2014 XV Crosstrek Hybrid improves upon that latter figure, bumping it up to 31 mpg.

The new XV Crosstrek Hybrid model’s powertrain is pretty simple, but the $3,000 premium is pretty steep. If gas costs $3.50 per gallon, and the XV Crosstrek Hybrid is driven 12,000 miles per year, and the hybrid gets 3 extra miles per gallon in combined driving, it saves 41.4 gallons of gas annually compared to the 2.0i model, putting an extra $145 in your pocket. That means it will take more than two decades to break even.

Safety Ratings:

Based on its performance in crash-tests conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), the Subaru XV Crosstrek is a “Top Safety Pick+” because it got the highest possible score in the tough new small overlap frontal-impact test. As this summary is written, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has not conducted crash tests on the XV Crosstrek.

Technology Highlights:

Aside from the available gas/electric hybrid powertrain, the 2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek can be optioned with a navigation system that includes a reversing camera, Bluetooth streaming audio, text-messaging capability, HD Radio with iTunes tagging, and more.
