Changes for the 2014 Subaru Impreza:
For 2014, the Subaru Impreza’s optional navigation system includes Aha smartphone integration technology and the Impreza Limited is equipped with a standard reversing camera.
Model Lineup:
Subaru sells the 2014 Impreza as a 4-door sedan or a 5-door hatchback. The performance tuned WRX and WRX STI variants are based on the previous-generation Impreza, and are covered in a separate summary. The 2014 Impreza Sedan is sold in 2.0i, 2.0i Premium, and 2.0i Limited trim levels. In addition to these models, the Impreza 5-door hatchback is offered in 2.0i Sport Premium and 2.0i Sport Limited trim.
Premium models add 16-inch aluminum wheels, a rear stabilizer bar, body-color exterior mirrors, cruise control, additional stereo speakers, and upgraded interior trim. The Sport Premium is further equipped with 17-inch aluminum wheels, fog lights, and unique seat fabric.
Limited and Sport Limited models add leather seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, an automatic climate control system, heated front seats, heated side mirrors, a wiper de-icer system, automatic headlights, a reversing camera, and an upgraded audio system with Bluetooth, HD Radio, a USB port, and more.
Engines and Transmissions:
All Imprezas have a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine making 148 horsepower. A 5-speed manual gearbox is included for 2.0i, 2.0i Premium, and 2.0i Sport Premium models. A Lineartronic continuously variable transmission (CVT) is optional for the 2.0i Premium and 2.0i Sport Premium models and standard for 2.0i Limited and 2.0i Sport Limited models. It includes a 6-speed manual mode, paddle shifters, and Incline Start Assist.
All-wheel drive is standard for all Imprezas. With a manual gearbox, the AWD system delivers power in a 50/50 split under normal driving conditions, and then varies power distribution as is necessary based on wheel slip. With the CVT, the AWD system is an Active Torque Split system that powers the front wheels, transferring it rearward when the front wheels slip.
Fuel Economy Ratings:
With the standard manual gearbox, the Impreza is rated to return 28 mpg in combined driving. Choose the CVT, and the Impreza delivers 30 mpg, according to the EPA.
Safety Ratings:
In crash tests conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), the 2014 Impreza earned a “Top Safety Pick+” rating thanks to structural changes that help the compact car to earn a “Good” rating in the difficult new small overlap frontal-impact assessment.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Adminstration (NHTSA) gives the Impreza a 5-star rating for side-impact protection and for rollover resistance. The NHTSA does not assign the Impreza a frontal-impact or overall crash-test rating due to the changes Subaru has made to the vehicle’s structure for 2014. Last year, the Impreza earned an overall rating of 5 stars, so the Impreza should repeat this performance for 2014.
Technology Highlights:
For 2014, the Impreza offers Aha smartphone integration, allowing vehicle owners to pair their phones and stream music, access Facebook and Twitter, choose from 40,000 worldwide radio stations, and more. The Impreza Limited models have a standard reversing camera this year.
