The 2019 Hyundai Santa Fe is an all-new crossover this year with two rows and seating for five passengers. It received a styling update inside and out as part of its major makeover, and an impressive new array of available safety features. The new model has also performed well in crash tests, earning both a 2018 Top Safety Pick+ rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and a 5-star rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. With a choice of front-wheel or all-wheel drive and two different powertrains, the Santa Fe starts at an affordable $25,500.

There’s a lot to like about the new 2019 Santa Fe, but there’s also plenty of competition. Here are 10 competitors we think you should consider.

2019 Subaru Forester

The 2019 Subaru Forester also is all-new this year with a fresh look and new features. Although it has not yet been crash-tested, it comes with a strong suite of standard safety features to keep you and your passengers safe. This includes Subaru’s EyeSight driver assist technology, which bundles adaptive cruise control, pre-collision braking, lane departure and sway warning, and lane keep assist into a single package.

All-wheel drive is standard across the lineup, as well as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto for quick and easy smartphone integration. There are five available trims, starting with the base Forester at $24,295 and topping out with the Touring at $34,295.

2018 Honda CR-V

The 2018 Honda CR-V is a roomy five-passenger crossover offered in four trims with two available engines. While the base trim gets a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine with 184 hp, the rest of the lineup gets a more responsive turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cyinder with 190 hp. The CR-V received an overall 5-star rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and is a 2018 Top Safety Pick with the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

While features are limited on the base trim, the rest of the lineup includes standard Apple CarPlay and Android Audio along with a 7-inch infotainment touchscreen. There’s a choice of front-wheel or all-wheel drive, with the base LX starting at $25,245 and the fully featured Touring coming in at $35,145.

2019 Nissan Rogue

The 2019 Nissan Rogue is a well-equipped crossover available in three trims. Standard features across the lineup include NissanConnect with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a 7-inch infotainment touchscreen. Although not yet crash-tested by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, the 2019 Nissan Rogue received an overall 4-star rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Standard safety beginning with the SV trim includes automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, rear automatic braking, and lane departure warning.

A choice of front-wheel or all-wheel drive is offered on very trim, with the base S starting at $24,800 and the top SV with all-wheel drive coming in at $32,740. There’s also a Rogue hybrid available, with pricing from $27,600 to $32,890.

2018 Toyota RAV4

The 2018 Toyota RAV4 is available in six trims with a choice of front-wheel or all-wheel drive. It gets high marks for safety with an overall 5-star rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and a 2018 Top Safety Pick rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. It also comes standard with Toyota Safety Sense P, featuring pre-collision with pedestrian detection, lane departure alert with steering assist, automatic high beams, and dynamic radar cruise control.

The RAV4 ranges in price from $24,660 for the LE to $34,600 for the Platinum with all-wheel drive. There also are four hybrid trims priced from $27,385 to $34,280.

2019 Jeep Cherokee

The 2019 Jeep Cherokee debuts a new look this year along with an all-new 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with 270 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. It also has an enhanced 9-speed automatic transmission that provides a smoother ride. What sets the Cherokee apart from other crossovers is its off-road capability featuring standard Selec-Terrain with five traction control settings.

It’s available in front-wheel or a variety of four-wheel drive configurations, with features including a mechanically locking rear differential. The Cherokee also can tow up to 4,500 pounds when properly equipped. The lineup of five trims starts with the Latitude at $24,195 and tops out with the Trailhawk at $33,470.

2019 Chevrolet Equinox

The 2019 Chevrolet Equinox is available with front-wheel or all-wheel drive, with a choice of two turbocharged gas engines or a turbocharged diesel. Standard infotainment features a 7-inch color touchscreen with AM/FM, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. There’s also 4G LTE Wi-Fi connectivity and two USB ports.

This crossover has not yet been crash-tested by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, but it received an overall 5-star rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Standard safety features include a unique Teen Driver feature to monitor a teen’s driving so parents can help them develop safe driving habits. There’s a range of four trims, from the base Equinox L at $23,800 to the Premier at $31,000.

2018 Mazda CX-5

The 2018 Mazda CX-5 is a sleek and stylish crossover with excellent road manners. It’s a crossover for people who love to drive, featuring a responsive 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with 187 hp and 186 lb-ft of torque. Standard features include a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, 7-inch color infotainment touchscreen, and two USB ports.

It also gets top marks for safety, with an overall 5-stars from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and a Top Safety Pick+ rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. There’s a choice of front-wheel or all-wheel drive with three trim levels. The base Sport is priced at $24,150, while the top Grand Touring is priced at $30,945.

2019 Ford Escape

The 2019 Ford Escape is available with a choice of three fuel-efficient engines and either front-wheel or four-wheel drive. The SYNC3 infotainment system with an 8-inch color touchscreen is standard on all but the base model, while every Escape gets automatic headlights and AM/FM/MP3 with six speakers. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has not yet crash-tested the 2019 Escape, but the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration awarded it an overall 5-stars.

There are four available trims starting with the base Escape S with a price of $24,105. Sitting at the top of the lineup is the Titanium, which comes in with a starting price of $32,620.

2019 Kia Sportage

The 2019 Kia Sportage is offered with a choice of front-wheel or all-wheel drive. It also has two available engines, including a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder with 240 hp and 237 lb-ft of torque. It has not yet been crash-tested by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, but it received an overall 5-star rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Standard features include a 5-inch infotainment touchscreen with AM/FM/CD/MP3, while higher trims get a 7-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay/Android Auto and an available 8-speaker Harman Kardon audio system. Pricing ranges from $24,750 for the base LX with front-wheel drive and goes up to $34,600 for the SX Turbo with all-wheel drive.

2019 GMC Terrain

The 2019 GMC Terrain is available with three turbocharged engines, including a diesel option, and a choice of either front-wheel or all-wheel drive. This upscale crossover has standard features including 17-inch aluminum wheels, LED exterior lights, and active aero shutters for improved fuel economy. There’s a standard 7-inch infotainment touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot connectivity.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has not yet crash-tested the GMC Terrain, but the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration gave it an overall 5-star rating. Standard safety includes Teen Driver, which monitors driving habits so parents can help coach their teens. The Terrain is available in four trims including the luxurious Denali, with pricing yet to be released.
