Changes for the 2014 Scion xD:

The 2014 Scion xD gains a standard 6.1-inch touchscreen radio with Bluetooth connectivity and music streaming, HD Radio, a USB port, and premium speakers. Optionally, a new BeSpoke touchscreen infotainment system pairs a navigation system with Aha smartphone access to social media platforms and more than 30,000 global music, news, sports, and information channels. Additionally, buyers can choose from new 2-tone paint options: Black Sand over Magnetic Gray or Classic Silver over Sparkling Sea.

Model Lineup:

Scion sells the 2014 xD in what it calls “mono-spec” trim, which means it rolls out of the factory with standard equipment and either a manual or an automatic transmission. Aside from the BeSpoke infotainment system, options are installed by the dealer, and they include appearance, utility, and an impressive number of performance upgrades.

Engines and Transmissions:

A 128-horsepower, 1.8-liter 4-cylinder engine is the only engine offered for the 2014 xD, paired with a choice between a 5-speed manual gearbox or a 4-speed automatic transmission. Scion included complimentary maintenance for all xD models, good for the first two years or 25,000 miles following purchase.

Fuel Economy Ratings:

Regardless of transmission choice, a Scion xD is rated to get 29 mpg. Scion could improve that number if it installed modern transmissions with additional gears.

Safety Ratings:

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has not performed crash tests on the 2014 xD, but the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has. The IIHS finds that the xD performs at the best level of “Good” in all evaluations for which it has been assessed. The xD has not been subjected to the small overlap frontal-impact test as this summary is written.

Technology Highlights:

At $1,198, the optional BeSpoke infotainment system is a pricey upgrade for an inexpensive car, but that’s a Scion hallmark: provide an affordable starting point for a fundamentally decent car and give cash-strapped buyers the ability to upgrade as the budget allows. When equipped with the BeSpoke system, the Scion xD features a navigation system and provides access to social media platforms as well as more than 30,000 information and entertainment channels from around the world through Aha service.
