Getting firsthand information from an actual car owner is one sure way to get an idea of car performance once it leaves the lot. Autobytel features real consumer reviews that give the unbiased experience of a car.
Pros: the box shape :-), not going to the gas station every other day, cheap auto insurance :-)
Cons: low interior lighting, no armrest, small mirrors/small sunvisors,no speeds for back windshield wiper.
Advice: look at this car as a 'fun' car not a fast and furious car-it doesn't like going up hills much.I absolutely love my 2005 black scion xb. I love getting the stares from people as I drive past them. I'm only 5'2 tall so the room in this car is amazing! The only negatives about this car is that I feel that an arm rest should come standard in it, the interior lighting is bad (there needs to be light in the back cargo area!),there are no speeds for the back window wiper and the sunvisors and mirrors are to small. But other than that I love it! The gas is great. I have my eye out on the 2006 orange colored xb. that's so sweet....
Pros: THE ROOM
Cons: NO LEATER SEATS
Advice: IF YOU WANT FUEL ECONOMY THEN ITS HERE IF YOU WANT FUN ITS HERE IF YOU WANT TO BE NOTICE YOU WILLIT MAY NOT BE THE PRETTIEST BUT ITS ALOT OF FUN AND TAKES ME FAR ON A TANK OF FUEL
Pros: Price, Cargo room, Fuel economy, Stereo
Cons: Overpriced options
Advice: Cruise control is a must. Avoid all the tacky, 'hip' add-ons that are ridiculously priced.Comfort: To be expected for a small, cheap car. I am 6'5 so I have trouble with most cars. Seats are okay. Headroom is tremendous, legroom is so-so for driver, good for passenger. Rear seat room is cavernous. With the rear seats down the cargo area is incredible! Stereo is best I have heard in a factory car despite the annoying push-buttons for tuning and volume.....Some quirks - No armrests or standard cruise control(I installed both with aftermarket parts from allscion.com). Sun visors are positively useless at the sides. Ride can be harsh because of suspension and low-profile tires. The boxy profile leades to some pretty stiff buffeting in high winds or around large trucks. Performance: This is not a performace car. The 1.5 Liter Echo engine gives just enough performance to get around. The advertised MPG ratings are about right (32/35) but I regularly get 39mpg due to my driving style. Regular maintenance is easy as pie if you do you own garage work. Quality: To be expected from a Toyota product. Mine went into the shop 3 times for a problem with the stereo which was mainly due to the stinginess of the dealer and the lack of experience with this model. One concern is the front skirt which is dreadfully low and flimsy. Be VERY careful when around curbs or parking with concrete wheel barriers or with animal/debris strikes. My skirt had to be replaced at 10,000 miles and it is cracked again at 25,000miles. Doors are rather cheap feeling, but the interior is good. Appearance: This is almost totally subjective. I love the boxiness because it gives me great headroom and cargo space. My daughters (15 year olds) initially hated it until their friends got to ride in it and loved it, so now it's cool. Be prepared for some stares and chuckling though. Overall Rating: Very Good - It's too bad Toyota marketed this to kids as a hip car bacause most of the folks I know who buy these are older and look for economy and utility, of which the Xb provides in droves. The negatives are mostly just annoying and typical for any new model. Most of the issues I mention are well known to Toyota and given their track record, I have no doubt they are working to fix most of them. Although the safety features are minimal, this car is great for most anyone who does not mind being seen in a 'breadbox'. This is a great alternative to gas-guzzling SUV's. The whole Scion line would be a great candidate for hybrid technology !! (hint to Toyota ;-)
Pros: Interior space
Cons: no cruise control, limited interior lighting.
Advice: Get the Manual Transmission. Add Air Intake kit.Love the space. At 6 foot even, I never have to worry about brushing the headliner. Interior room has to be experienced to be believed. Rear seats are very roomy. A sports car it is not, but it handles much better than an old VW bus (my poorest performing car EVER). Even with 5 passengers (3 adults, 2 children) there is room enough for all. Great mileage and superb basic package inclusions (i.e., 4-wheel disc brakes, A/C, etc.)Excellent visibility. Very efficient instrument cluster. My favorite moment so far is when my 7 year old saw it for the first time, he said ' Daddy! You bought a Hot Wheels!' He's got me thinking about a green and gold flame job. lol
Pros: Panoramic view
Cons: You feel the bumps on brick roads and speed bumps even at slow speeds
Advice: Get cruise control if you plan on driving long distance. see if your passengers enjoy the second seat.A fun car to drive. Good value for the money. Nice ride on smooth surfaces but ride on a brick rode or go over a speed bump even slowly and you will feel it. It needs a longer visor or extension as visor not protect drivers eyes from sun when used in side position. Awesome stereo can play several CDs one after another. Arm rest would be an asset. Front seat driving much more comfortable than back passenger seat although there is plenty of room for passengers bodies and legs. Lots of ceiling room no way you will brush it wiht your head. Nice touch putting a head rest in center back seat. Also ice chest in floor when you open the hatch makes it an excellent tail gate party vehicle. Love the fact I can walk under the opened hatchback without bumping my head. Love the fact they made the front bumper high enough so it does not hit the parking stops and tear up the car. Wish it came standard with the rubber molding around the doors and down the side to prevent nicking from and to other cars.Love the spacious under seat storage.Just enough room for a family of 4 groceries without putting second seat down. Really could use a hatchback ceiling light and a gas tank larger than 10 galloons. I have been getting 27 miles to a galloon in the city-lot of stop and starting. Much better on the road-35. Have a friend who moved a grand father clock from Florida to Ohio in the scion XB with the hatch down. That was enough to make him buy a second one.Loaded the car hugs the road well.Doors are light and need a little force to make sure they are closed. Also car needs 2 minutes of warming before cold light goes off and you have the pick up you need to go down the road. The steering is awesome. Your able to avoid animals or get out of the way of a car that stops short in front of you as long as you have the normal distance between you and the car in front of you. I know this happened to me and I could not believe the maneuverabilty. I was able to get out of the way quickly with no harm to me my passengers or the car.Oh for those that say 'what is it?' on the title it is classified as a station wagon even though it does not look like a station wagon. Car Insurance is a wee higher as it is still a new and unproven commodity and the research is yet to come in. I would get cruise control if I brought again. Still might add it.
Cons: Gas Mileage
Advice: Don't Buy oneDrives great. Love the car. I bought one and it gets 25 miles on the highway not 37. Plus the radio has been fixed (removed) twice. This cars sucks. When they lemon law it for me I will be buying a Saturn Vue
Cons: Inside lighting
Advice: noneI love the way it performs. Could use more power up hills
