Engines and Transmissions:

Depending on the cab style, trim level, and cargo bed, the 2014 Ram 1500 comes standard with either a 3.6-liter V-6 engine or a 5.7-liter V-8 engine. For 2014, a new 3.0-liter turbo-diesel V-6 is available on certain versions of the Ram 1500 for a price premium of $2,850 beyond the cost of the V-8 engine.

The 3.6-liter V-6 is rated to make 305 horsepower at 6,400 rpm and 269 lb.-ft. of torque at 4,175 rpm. The 5.7-liter V-8 delivers 395 horsepower at 5,600 rpm and 410 lb.-ft. of torque at 3,950 rpm. The new 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V-6 engine option produces 240 horsepower at 3,600 rpm and 420 lb.-ft. of torque at 2,000 rpm. Both the gasoline and diesel V-6 engines are equipped with a standard 8-speed automatic transmission. The V-8 is offered with a 6-speed or an 8-speed automatic, depending on configuration.

According to Chrysler, the Ram 1500 can tow up to 10,450 pounds and can carry a payload of up to 1,930 lbs., when the truck is properly equipped.

As this summary was written, the EPA had not officially rated the new 3.0-liter EcoDiesel engine, but Chrysler estimates that the Ram 1500’s new turbo-diesel will get better than 25 mpg on the highway.
