2014 Nissan Versa
Changes for the 2014 Nissan Versa:
Nissan makes several changes to its entry-level economy sedan, adding standard equipment across the board while revising the steering and suspension for improved ride and handling characteristics. Upper trim levels have modified front seats claimed to provide better comfort, and new options include an Easy Fill Tire Alert system and a NissanConnect navigation and connectivity system.
Model Lineup:
Versa Sedan buyers choose from S, S Plus, SV, and SL trim levels. Aside from air conditioning, the Versa S is sparsely equipped. The appropriately named S Plus model adds a standard continuously variable transmission (CVT) and aerodynamic enhancements that increase gas mileage. Additionally, the S Plus is equipped with additional stereo speakers and cruise control.
Most people will want the Versa SV, which has power windows, mirrors, and door locks with remote keyless entry. A height adjustable driver’s seat and a front center armrest are standard for this model, and a 60/40-split folding rear seat expands the already generous 14.9 cu.-ft. trunk. The Versa SV looks nicer inside and out, too.
The Versa SL includes Bluetooth, a passive keyless entry system with push-button starting, a premium sound system with satellite radio and a USB port, and an Easy Fill Tire Alert system. A set of 16-inch aluminum wheels and fog lights identify the Versa SL.
A Convenience Package is optional for the Versa SV, adding aluminum wheels, fog lights, Bluetooth, and a better stereo. The Versa SL can be optioned with a Technology Package including a NissanConnect navigation and infotainment system (see details below). Additionally, several factory- and dealer-installed options are offered for all three Versa models.
Engines and Transmissions:
Every 2014 Versa Sedan is equipped with a 109-horsepower, 1.6-liter 4-cylinder engine. The base S model comes standard with a 5-speed manual gearbox, and offers a 4-speed automatic transmission as an option. All other Versas are equipped with a CVT.
Fuel Economy Ratings:
The CVT is the most fuel-efficient transmission choice, averaging 35 mpg in combined driving according to the EPA. Comparatively, the Versa S is expected to get 30 mpg regardless of transmission choice.
Safety Ratings:
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has not rated the 2014 Versa Sedan. Last year, this car was named a “Top Safety Pick” for its “Good” rating in the moderate offset frontal-impact, side-impact, rear-impact, and roof crush strength tests.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) gives the Versa Sedan an overall rating of 4 stars. In frontal-impact testing, the car turned in a 3-star performance for front passenger protection, and in side-impact testing, the car earned a 3-star rating for driver protection.
Technology Highlights:
Two new technologies debut on the 2014 Versa Sedan. Nissan’s Easy Fill Tire Alert system is standard for the Versa SL, and beeps when the owner has inflated the tires to the proper pressure. Optional for the SL model, NissanConnect includes a reversing camera, a navigation system, real-time traffic and weather reports, Pandora radio, and voice-recognition technology with a text-messaging assistant.
