Getting firsthand information from an actual car owner is one sure way to get an idea of car performance once it leaves the lot. Autobytel features real consumer reviews that give the unbiased experience of a car.
Pros: Classy look and feel--love the panel, vertical, non opening sun roof
Cons: Color of the dash display and the limited data for radio data (artist name, etc. on XM)
Advice: Try the black interior. In December I bought two new cars--a 2006 Maxima SL for my wife and an Acura TL for myself. Having two news cars gives me some basis for comparison. The power of the Maxima is outstanding. The ride is softer as are the seats. The vertical, non opening sunroof is cool. The mileage is good, but not great--23 or so on the Maxima, 26 or so on the TL. I did not get the navigation system on the Maxima. The display for XM satellite radio is absolutely miserly--10 characters. In other words, you generally get a first name and a couple of characters of a second name.
Cons: center console
Advice: Drive it on different road surfaces. There is quite a bit of road noise but it handles and drives like a sports car.Outstanding performance. We bought it because we have a 2000 Pathfinder and it has been so dependable. The most fun car that I have ever owned. I have had it up to 130 with plenty of pedal left.
Pros: The amazing engine and great sound system
Cons: I've had problems with the power driver seat and power windows
Advice: Great buy and sportier than the accord and camry. Try both the SE and GLE before you buy, the SE rides on the rough side. One word: terrific! The engine is smooth and quiet...it produces great torque at any speed. The handling is good and ride is smothers out most road imperfections nicely. I bought the GLE and I love the bose system, automatic climate control and the sharp ivory leather interior. I'm disappointed by the awful turning radius...at times is makes it tough to love this car when hunting for parking spots that my friend's accords and passats easily slip into.
Pros: The power & speed
Cons: What is there to not like?
Advice: Buy it if you can find it!I love my Maxima! I just bought it this week after looking for exactly what I wanted for the past 2 months! I traded in a Honda Accord (yeah, the same silver one everyone has) for this beautiful, powerful, smooth GLE with only 15,000 miles on it! I have owned a Maxima before, and never had any problems with it. The ride is quiet and feels like you are gliding. The system is awesome, and it has the luxury car feel (I have the leather/sunroof pkg). I also drove a 2004 Infiniti G35 that I loved, but the engine was basically the same, and the Max is more cost efficient for the package you are getting.
Cons: everything else
Advice: use cautionBuyers beware on the Maxima, it is not being made like the older models, this car has been the upmost worst car I ever purchased ( NEMET NISSAN ) I had the car for 3 months and have been to the dealers at least 10- 15 times with all types of problems with the engine & transmission.
Advice: Toyota AvalonI believe quality has dropped. The engine flooded with fuel twice. The second time so bad that it flooded the oil.Nissan found and did nothing. Wouldnt even change the oil, I had changed it 2 weeks prior. Gas mileage was great with synthetic oil.
Pros: stereo , engine
Cons: noise , vibration front end
Advice: drive for at least 2 hours on hills , in town. you need to pick up the exhauzt and torque converter between 30-35 MPHHave owned 5 Nissan Maxima's. All were the luxury ride versions. The 2006 SL is a very beautifull looking car with some great accesories. Sound system is excellent and seats are comfortable. I haven't had the car long enough to have all the problems found with struts and tires on the '05 and '04. I do have an annoying vibration in the car that the dealer says is part of road feel. Baloney---my other Max's never had this vibration except when I had a bad tire or they needed to be balanced. The torque converter searching is really a surprise , especially when my 98 had it and Nissan had it almost eliminated in '02 Max GLE. Now it is back big time. Some may like the loud exhaust with new duels. I live in rolling countryside and up hills these duels really wear you down. Not a luxury car feel at all! So Nissan needs to go back to the drawing board and put some quality into the suspension and noise level. A little sound deading might not be a bad idea to stop that loud road noise permeating the cabin. NO--this is not a luxury vehicle.
