Getting firsthand information from an actual car owner is one sure way to get an idea of car performance once it leaves the lot. Autobytel features real consumer reviews that give the unbiased experience of a car.
Pros: Both the interior and exterior appearance
Advice: Wait to see if there is a recall before you buy.I've made 1 payment on my Tribute, have had it for 1 month / 18 days. I've loved every minute of this vehicle - until today. This morning in rush hour traffic my beloved Tribute stalled. When a vehicle stalls it becomes harder to steer, and harder to break. I was traveling about 40 mph, with cars all around me. Needless to say, I'm very blessed to be alive. Since this morning, I've found several other reviews from others who have experienced a similar situation. Curious as to what the dealership may know, I called a few to see if they were aware and exactly what they would say. Consensus is..They all knew of this problem, and all pretty much knew what it would take to correct. 'It's a problem with programming of the emissions control system, it's set too low' was the most popular response from the dealerships. Does someone have to die for this issue to gain some attention? Where's the recall? I just had my car towed to the dealership as I'm scared to drive it. I'm now contacting NHTSA with a complaint.
Pros: It's really zippy if you drive the 5-speed
Cons: Ugly interior color schemes
Advice: Be sure to drive the Sentra before you decide.I spent two or three days at the Mazda dealership--I was convinced that this was the car I wanted. But after driving the Nissan Sentra, it was a clear choice for me to forget the Mazda. Its boxy exterior and unstylish interior, coupled with a really ugly black box of a CD player, unattractive interior upholstery choices and ugly paint jobs cinched the decision. Go for a Sentra.
Advice: Buy a Chevy Trailblazer, Jeep Liberty, or anything but a Tribute or Escape.I bought a 2002 Tribute V6 ES 4WD in October 2001 and traded it 9 months later. At first it appeared to be a good balance between power and gas mileage compared to other SUVs in it's class. Then the quality problems surfaced. In general, the car is not well engineered. The plastic panels on each side of the driver seat kept popping off; one had to be replaced when the flimsy tab broke off. The gear shift lever blocks view of the rear defroster button so you can't see if it is on without practically laying down in the seat. Since the rear defroster does not automatically turn off, you can ride around for days with it on. Next the mechanical problems. The passenger door became permanently locked. The dealer had to destroy the door panel to get the door open to replace the mechanism. Then the car developed a hesitation problem. All this after only 12,000 miles was more than I could take. All in all, it's a Ford.
Pros: 6 disc in dash CD changer, power moonroof
Cons: position of gear shift, hard to put key in ignition, and the gear shift is also not illuminated
Advice: Test drive it-rides great, get the extras-not much more! This SUV rides very smooth!
Pros: Premium Audio Package
Cons: The selection of exterior colors available
Advice: I'm somewhat disappointed????My Tribute stalled while sitting at a traffic light one evening. The dealer service technician's response was, 'All cars stall'. My response was, ' Not my brand-new,hardly been driven car'. My truck was in the shop for 6 days. The dealer service tech said that an Air Flow Sensor (emissions system)and a corroded ground wire needed to be replaced. Go figure! And here I thought 'ALL CARS STALL'??? According to the dealer, my car was manufactured in Feb. 2002. I purchased it at the end of April 2002. This incident occurred in June 2002 with barely 2000 miles on it. One can see why I'm a little disappointed!
Cons: Some of the trim is a little 'plasticy' and cheap appearing
Advice: Tyy it, you'll love it.I bought the LX-V6 4WD about 1 month ago. I got the luxury package (moonroof & premium stereo - well worth the cost), ABS & towing package. I preferred the cloth seats over the leather. Excellent power, reasonable gas milage. I'm averaging about 20-21mpg combined city/highway. I think this vehicle is the best looking SUV in its class. The handling is great. Much better than I expected for an SUV. The Tribute is classified as a 'compact' SUV, but is by far the largest, roomiest vehicle in its class. It appears to compare more with mid-size SUVs which tend to run at least $5000 more. My only complaint so far was a bit of ill-fitting trim on the driver's side roof pillar. It didn't sit flush with the dash. And the rear wiper wouldn't touch the glass. However, both were corrected after a trip back to the dealer. The fit & finish isn't quite up to the standard of a Toyota or Honda, but I think this is the best deal for a vehicle in this category.
Pros: Brakes are very good.
Cons: The air conditioner is pathetic and dealer will not address the issue.
Advice: Make sure the air conditioner is comfortable for you under normal driving conditions. Run the AC without recirculated air to see if it cools ok.Car hesitates at low speeds and in turns. Seems to shift hard and hesitate from first to second gear.
