Getting firsthand information from an actual car owner is one sure way to get an idea of car performance once it leaves the lot. Autobytel features real consumer reviews that give the unbiased experience of a car.
Pros: The standard CD player.
Cons: It did't come with a cassette player.
Advice: Buy It!The ride is very smooth.
Pros: Land Rover look on the front grill
Cons: Key opened gas tank, interior side panels
Advice: Try Jeep Liberty, Ford Escape, and of course Discovery. Make sure engine strong enough for your needs.Smaller SUV of the Land Rover world. Still stare at the Discovery, but size wise, this car is the smartest for a commuter. Gas tank is too small, however, milleage not that bad. Seats do not adjust up or down. Gas tank has to be opened with a key. Owned for 1 month, already the sunroof needs to be repaired. Pick up on the highway not great, but solid ride. Otherwise happy with the car. Has a great look, feels strong. Auto back window cool feature. Easily enough room for 3-4 sets of clubs in the trunck (have to see how it does for the ski season). Side interior panels little lost without leather touch.
Pros: automatic/ sport transmission
Cons: Typical Land Rover box appearance
Advice: Be aware Land Rover Corp. still have certain bugs to work out with this vehicle and they are not great at sharing info with their retailers. The Freelander, is very stable on snow covered, or icy roads. Auto shift, gives you the option to shift for yourself in tricky winter conditions. Another nice winter feature is the heated windshield eliminating the need to scrape ice. As for summer features, Freelander can climb mountain passes with ease and can travel through city traffic like a native. Very easy to manuever in most conditions. Some creature comforts could be better such as the output of the air conditioner and armrests would be nice, let's re-think the window controls. Still, all said and done, great car for the price.
Pros: This is the only small SUV truly made for offroad conditions
Cons: It could be a little bit larger (couple inches) for more storage in rear
Advice: Wonderful lease programs available. Armrest is available for front seat - got mine on Ebay. This is the most under-rated vehicle on the road today. The quality is unsurpassed in any SUV in it's category. (small and mid-size - under $30,000). It has a luxury car ride. A little slow off the line, but the steptronic shifting capability can take care of this. Once you are at speed, passing ability is superb. Smooth ride, great visibility. A pleasure to drive. I plan to buy another one when my lease is up.
Pros: The stable and secure handling on highway and off-road.
Cons: The vehicle is too new for the technicians to have experienced how to repair unusual defects.
Advice: Buy it. The problems I have had are not common to the vehicle, and Land Rover does stand behind their products.Great design; very much a Land Rover. I would recommend that the rocker panels under the doors be encased in black to match the bumpers, but that is a personal preference. Others have stated they like the design as is. The vehicle handles exceptionally well and has quite adequate aceleration and power. The braking and all wheel drive systems are first rate; just what you expect from a Land Rover. I have had some trouble with the electrical system: the fuel indicator will show empty in error (even with a full tank) at times; the electronically controlled transmission shifts erratically (smooth sometimes, and neck-wrenching hard at the same speed the next time); and the engine will not restart if you leave it off for less than 30 minutes on a warm day. All this has been diagnosed as a voltage irregularity that affects the on-board computer; am hoping the dealer figures out how to fix it eventually. Overall, this is a super SUV for those looking for a small to medium sized SUV. It is far superior to the comparable vehicles we looked at. The interior room, all wheel drive system, features, handling and mountain climbing/off-road ability are first rate.
Pros: Traction control / hill descent.
Cons: Reliability... My Freelander has been in the shop 1/2 the time I have owned it
Advice: Buy 2. One to drive while the other is in the shop. The Freelander has good handling, braking, and a comfortable ride. I think a more powerful engine would help out though. Acceleration is sluggish. The interior quality is pretty decent (once they fixed a squeak in my driver's seat). The only down side is the reliability. My Freelander has spent over a month in the shop and I have only owned it for 3 months. I still wonder what the 'F4' engine code means...
Pros: Heated Front Windshield & Heated Side Mirrors
Cons: Gas Tank has to be opened w/ your key and there's no despository hold for the gas cap.
Advice: Take it out for a drive & you'll fall in love.Amazing. I was actually set to buy a Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo (for 4 years) but test drove the Freelander & was hooked! Very nice SUV and much more distinctive than all the others in it's class!
