Automakers often look to build their business by catering to younger customers, but a program promoting the 2014 Mitsubishi Outlander recently took matters all the way back to their logical conclusion. Called the Mitsubishi First Drive Event, it offered a complementary ride to three newborns—and their parents—who were leaving the hospital for their first trip home. And naturally, that trip was completed in a 2014 Mitsubishi Outlander, which is among the few vehicles in its class to earn Top Safety Pick+ recognition from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS)—and not for the first time, either.
Said Jessica Robinson, an engineer involved with Vehicle Verification and Testing at Mitsubishi Motors R&D of America, Inc.: "When the all-new 2014 Mitsubishi Outlander was named an IIHS 'Top Safety Pick+' for the second year in a row, we were inspired to prove the benefits of riding in one of America's safest crossover vehicles in a critically important way. High vehicle safety ratings should be a priority—with or without children. And finally, a couple of extra minutes making sure you know how to properly install and use child safety seats could be a life saver."
As a reminder, the only non-lux crossovers to have been named to the 2014 Top Safety Pick+ honor roll are the:
- 2014 Mitsubishi Outlander
- 2014 Mazda CX-5
- 2014 Nissan Rogue
- 2014 Subaru Forester
- 2014 Chevy Equinox
- 2014 GMC Terrain
- 2014 Toyota Highlander
Also, just to be clear, only models with some form of forward-collision technology qualify for the IIHS' "+" rating, with the 2014 Mitsubishi Outlander meeting that criterion thanks to its available, radar-based Forward Collision Mitigation system.
