Pros: everything but the interior
Cons: the interior
Advice: buy itMy husband is a service Manager at a Lincoln Mercury dealer and we just fell in love with the Mariner and bought it w/o test driving it and I have no regrets.....
Pros: Heated leather seats and alloy wheels
Cons: Interior carpet quality
Advice: Take advantage of year end 2000.00 rebateThe Mariner Premier model we purchased after one test drive is worth the additional cost over the Luxury, as more std. features are included. Its a classy SUV compared to the Escape or Tribute. With 1000 miles on it, we have averaged 21 mpg. Opt for the leather upgrade in seating as opposed to the suede (fake) insert that comes standard. The sound system and moon roof are alos great options.
Cons: Handeling on the Highway
Advice: Take it for a ride on a day with a little wind.Very comfortable and performs great around town. Unfortunately, our first trip on the highway was less than pleasant. Excessive drift was experienced...more like a pull than a drift. Took the vehicle to the shop and they were able to make improvements; however, there is still a fair drift with crosswinds in excess of 10 mph.
Pros: If you compare gas mileage on the 4X2 V6 Automatic, it is as good as many sedans!
Cons: The gas lid is not locked from the inside, like the Mazda Tribute. You have to buy a locking gas cap, if that's important to you.
Advice: Compare; exterior/interior, 320 watt AM/FM/CD Changer AND gas mileage on the 4X2 V6 to many other vehicles and really look at the style of this vehicle. It is very appealing... smooth lines.I drove a Mazda Tribute which is in essence the same vehicle, however in my opinion, the Mariner is quieter. The Mariner has excellent handling and response. Very comfortable seats. I have taken 2 months to make my final decision, after 4 test drives.
Pros: Leather interior and sound system
Cons: Engine HP and torque is low (for my likes) and no auto climate control
Advice: Never would have considered Mercury until this model. I had the dealer order one w/ my specs w/o money down. Should arrive in time for year end incentives.Very smooth ride and not much outside noise enters cabin. The engine noise is noticible during hard accelerations. This vehicle could use a few more horsepower, but overall it is a very capable performer. For the money it is a great vehicle. I have looked at the Land Rover Disco and Freelander, Escape, 4Runner and X3 and will decide to purchase the Mariner for price/appointments above the Escape, safety (chose the side curtain airbags) vs. Land Rover and size vs. the 4Runner. I loved the X3's performance, but believe it is overpriced.
