Luxury and performance have always been the objectives of Mercedes-Benz cars, and the all new 2014 S550 is right up there in terms of exemplifying the company’s prowess. Mercedes says their S-Class executive sedan series is inspired by the “essence of luxury,” so Autobytel decided to see if the 2014 Mercedes-Benz S550 achieves that goal. Road Test Editor Aaron Gold test drove the S550 to check out its luxury street cred. Although the S550 is the entry level model of the S-Class, it reflects the brand’s values as well as the expectations of a luxury car buyer. Though the S550 starts at $97,000, Autobytel’s well-equipped test car rang up at more than $130,000. The S550 is decked out in a manner fitting for its price point and target market, constructed of aluminum and featuring a cabin swathed in top quality materials. The interior is upholstered in perforated leather and trimmed in genuine wood in warm tones. The driver faces a two-tone dashboard that’s fitted with a high end multimedia system and other upmarket features. The 2014 Mercedes-Benz S550 is powered by a 4.7-liter twin turbo V8 engine that produces 455 horsepower, and can make the 0-60 sprint in less than five seconds while still providing a smooth, controlled, quiet and comforting experience.
