At the 2014 New York Auto Show, Autobytel had the opportunity to chat with Jamie Corstophine, who is the Head of Product for McLaren Automotive. The topic of conversation was the all new 2015 McLaren 650S supercar. This new vehicle slots in the McLaren lineup between the MP4-12C and the P1. This is the brand’s fastest and most well equipped production car to roll off the line in the company’s history. The McLaren 650S produces 641 brake horsepower, which enables the car to propel from 0-60 in 2.9 seconds, and to make the 0-100 sprint in 5.7 seconds. Despite the performance capabilities of the 650S, McLaren’s engineers made the car efficient enough that it will not be subjected to the United States gas guzzler tax that is added to the sticker price of most supercars. An all new suspension system, and new wheels and tires, enhance the 650S driving experience. The tires were specifically chosen so the car would be “useable and easy to live with,” Jamie Corstophine explained. Though McLaren is confident that the 650S is the proper vehicle to help move the brand forward, the decision required a sacrifice, in that McLaren has decided to stop producing the MP4-12C, a car that the brand introduced in 2011.
