Are you looking for something a bit different in the midsize sedan market? Something that returns very good fuel economy while being fun to drive? Mazda has the answer for you with the 2014 Mazda6 sedan.

The 2014 Mazda6 is all new from the ground up and features the full suite of Mazda’s SKYACTIV Technologies. The first bit of SKYACTIV technology deals with the Mazda6’s body and structure. Mazda engineers use lightweight steel which offers the strength of normal steel with added lightness.

The second bit of SKYACTIV Technologies is with the powertrains. The 2014 Mazda6 uses a 2.5L SKYACTIV-G engine with 184 horsepower and 185 pound-feet of torque. That can be mated to a six-speed SKYACTIV-Drive manual transmission (only available on the base Sport model) or a six-speed SKYACTIV-Drive automatic transmission. Fuel economy for the Mazda6 is,

  • 2.5L with the six-speed manual: 25 City/37 Highway/29 Combined
  • 2.5L with the six-speed automatic: 26 City/38 Highway/30 Combined

There is also a new 2.2L SKTACTIV-D diesel engine coming sometime later this year that is promising more power and better fuel economy.

Now that we’ve given a brief explanation of the SKYACTIV Technologies, lets dive into the Mazda6 itself. The Mazda6 cannot be called ordinary in its design thanks to Mazda’s new Kodo design language. The unique front end and flowing lines throughout the body give the Mazda6 an aire of elegance. Inside, the Mazda6 is full of luxury appointments and features that many competitors envy.

A 2014 Mazda6 starts at $20,880 for the base Sport with six-speed manual and goes upwards to $29,495 for the Grand Touring.

Competitors to the Mazda6 include the Ford Fusion, Honda Accord, and Toyota Camry.
