Mazda kicked off the 2011 Los Angeles International Auto Show by introducing the all-new 2013 Mazda CX-5. This is the first Mazda model that incorporates the full suite of the automaker’s Skyactiv technologies that are aimed to improve fuel economy without losing the brand’s “zoom-zoom” spirit, but more importantly, the CX-5 will be the basis for all future front-wheel drive models heading into the future. The Mazda CX-5 will go on sale in the first quarter of 2012 just in time to go up against new compact crossovers like the 2012 Honda CR-V and 2013 Ford Escape. We have already driven the new CX-5, so stay tuned for our first drive review.

Aside from the Skyactiv technologies, the new CX-5 is also the first production Mazda vehicle to feature the new “Kodo” design language which is an attempt to give the car motion even at a standstill. The exterior design features plenty of hard body creases and stylish angles that were all inspired by the Minagi Concept earlier this year.  Inside, the CX-5’s cabin has a sportier layout with a driver-centric cockpit. Standout features inside the CX-5 include an available Tom Tom navigation system, a unique 40-20-40 split folding rear seat, standard Bluetooth connectivity and the ability to send and receive SMS test messages and stream Pandora Internet radio.

When it goes on sale, the CX-5 will use the Skyactiv-G engine tuned to produce 155 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 150 lb-ft of torque at 4,000 rpm. Those who are keeping up with stats will note that this is slightly more torque than the 2012 Mazda MAZDA3 that recently introduced Skyactiv, but the CX-5 gets a more efficient exhaust manifold with a “4-2-1” design that allows for the increased torque. In terms of fuel economy, Mazda is estimating best-in-class figures across the board with 26 mpg city and 33 mpg highway for the FWD manual transmission model and 25 mpg city and 30 highway for the all-wheel drive model that is only offered with the automatic transmission. Down the road, likely the 2014 model year, Mazda will be introducing its new Skyactiv-D diesel engine which it says produces more torque than a 4.0-liter V-8 engine.
