Project Yellow Light is a campaign aimed at improving awareness of driving and road safety among young, new drivers. Autobytel’s Editor-in-Chief, Michelle Naranjo, met up with some members of the group behind the campaign. They are up-and-coming race car drivers, who believe that their message can help prevent teenagers from driving while distracted. The Project Yellow Light group was featured in the Mazda booth at the 2014 New York Auto Show, since some of the racers promoting the campaign got into racing through the Skip Barber series and other amateur racing programs, driving Mazda vehicles. The group reaches out to educate new drivers by spreading their message as far as possible. Some of their objectives are to raise awareness of speed limits on public roads, encouraging teenagers to obey the speed limits, and speaking out about the dangers of texting while driving. Project Yellow Light says there’s better ways to get an adrenaline rush than by speeding on public roads. The group’s members want their peers to realize that there are more appropriate ways to get thrills while driving, such as learning to race and keeping the speed on a closed course like a race track.
