Mazda's real estate at the 2012 SEMA Show held several concepts based on an all-new platform as well as an example drawing from an old stand-by that still commands respect in the industry. The latter is of course a reference to the Mazda MX-5 Miata, the iconic roadster that was represented at SEMA by the Mazda Super25. The Mazda Super25 strips down the already lightweight performance car to its bare essentials and gets it ready for the 25-hour endurance race at Thunderhill Raceway Park in California, leaving most of the stock components intact but substituting in race seats and safety harnesses.
The remaining three concept vehicles brought by Mazda to the SEMA show were based on the Mazda CX-5 compact crossover, which is a fresh platform for the brand. The CX-5 180 combines two popular Californian past-times (surfing and skiing) and uses them as a springboard for its styling and modifications. The CX-5 Dempsey includes a turbodiesel engine (available in the European market) to help actor and race driver Patrick Dempsey haul his road bikes, while the CX-5 Urban draws inspiration from the inner city.
