Jaguar’s flagship sedan is celebrating a very big birthday — the XJ is turning 50 years old. To commemorate five decades of their most stately and luxurious offering, they have just released a special edition XJ50 at the 2018 Beijing Auto Show. The 2019 XJ50 is a stunning combination of design, performance, and technology; read on to find out what we know about this very special edition.

1) Its lineage is legendary.

In case you weren’t aware, the XJ has always been an elegant transporter. The very first XJ Series 1 was launched in 1968 and ever since it’s been the vehicle of choice for many business leaders and VIPs. For the last fifty years, the XJ has transported statesmen, politicians, and royalty. With over three feet of legroom in the back seat and a folding tray that comes down from the front headrests, it's perfect for a high-level executive to get some work done, or just stretch out and enjoy the ride.

2) Despite it’s reputation, it’s sporty, not stuffy.

You’d think that such a fancy car would be stodgy and slow, but the XJ is quite the contrary. The new limited edition XJ50 comes in two flavors, and the available 5.0L supercharged V8 that makes 470hp doesn’t follow the normal “old man sedan” profile. The car can also be had with a 3.0L supercharged V6 engine that makes 340hp, with rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive (the 5.0L engine is only available with RWD).

3) You’ll know the XJ50 is special just by looking at it from the outside.

A limited edition just wouldn’t be noteworthy if it didn’t contain special styling and design cues to set it apart from the standard version. The XJ50 comes exclusively as a long wheelbase model. It has unique front and rear bumpers and huge 20-inch wheels. The gloss black front grille matches the black accents on the wheels, and there are special badges on the side and rear of the car. The XJ50 will come in four classic colors: white, black, blue and red.

4) The interior is classic and comfort-laden.

Inside the cabin of the XJ50 are all the amenities you’d find in a standard XJ-L: a 10.2-in. color touchscreen display, heated and cooled front and rear seats, panoramic glass roof, blue ambient lighting and quilted leather seats. Thanks to the long wheelbase, the rear seat is spacious and luxurious and allows for even taller passengers to stretch and relax.

To distinguish it as the 50th Anniversary edition, the embossed leaping Jaguar on the front headrests are accompanied by an XJ50 logo on the center armrest. There are also illuminated XJ50 treadplates, special aluminum gearshift paddles, and bright metal pedals.

5) It will be available at the end of 2018.

As a 2019 model, the XJ50 will not be hitting dealerships until late 2018. Jaguar has yet to release the official launch date or pricing, but it will be available closer to its sale date at the end of the year. As with all Jaguars, the XJ50 is promised to come standard with a 5-year/60,000 mile warranty. Complimentary scheduled maintenance and 24/7 roadside assistance will accompany the vehicle through the life of the warranty as well.
