By far, the Lexus RX is the most popular luxury crossover SUV in America. Offered as the popular RX 350, the sport-tuned RX 350 F Sport, and the hybrid-powered RX 450h, the 2014 Lexus RX lineup ranges in price from just over $40,000 with standard equipment to nearly $60,000 with all the extras.

From the front wheels rearward, the 2014 Lexus RX 350 is rakish in appearance, exhibiting lots of style. The crossover SUV’s front end, however, especially now that the “spindle-style” grille mandated for all Lexus models has been grafted on, looks like a chubby-cheeked kid. By choosing the F Sport model, though, styling changes and bigger aluminum wheels help to eliminate the awkward proportions to some degree.

The 2014 Lexus RX 350 is stylish inside, and the dashboard picks up on the sensuality evident in the crossover’s exterior design details. Controls are laid out in logical fashion and are well marked. For those functions that must be accessed through the dashboard screen, an intuitive Remote Touch controller works just like a computer mouse, moving a corresponding cursor across the display screen to choose menu items of function buttons.

Front seat occupants are unlikely to complain about comfort. This test vehicle had the Saddle Tan leather interior color, the seats wrapped in soft and supple perforated leather with heated and ventilation. Everywhere the driver wants to rest an arm or elbow, Lexus provides a soft, padded surface. The leather-wrapped steering wheel is a joy to hold.

The Lexus RX is designed to hold a maximum of five people. A third-row seat is unavailable in this model. Kids are likely to be happy in the RX 350’s rear seat, especially if the optional dual-screen entertainment system is aboard (as seen here). Adults, though, especially those with longer legs, are likely to find the RX model’s back seat lacking in support.

If you need to carry both people and stuff, the Lexus RX 350 can haul five passengers and 40 cubic-feet of cargo. The rear seat offers a 40/20/40-split design, which means four adults and skis can make the trek to the mountains. Fold the rear seats down, and the RX holds 80 cu.-ft. of cargo.

A 270-horsepower, 3.5-liter V-6 engine is standard in the RX 350 and RX 350 F Sport models. The Lexus RX 450h is equipped with a gas-electric hybrid powertrain that pairs a 3.5-liter V-6 engine with an electric motor and a nickel-metal hydride battery pack to produce a combined 295 horsepower and to return up to 30 mpg in combined driving. This RX 350 test vehicle was not as fuel efficient, delivering 20.9 mpg with many of the miles covered on the freeway.

There’s no possible argument against the 2014 Lexus RX 350 when it comes to quality, dependability, and reliability. From interior materials to seat leather, the RX makes its owner feel like they’ve gotten what they paid for. Plus, this vehicle has proven for nearly 15 years that it is about as close to unbreakable as it gets.

In crash tests performed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the Lexus RX gets an overall rating of 4 stars or 5 stars, depending on whether or not it has the optional AWD system. It is the AWD model that earns the higher rating. In testing conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), the Lexus RX receives the top rating of “Good” in all tests that have been performed. Note, though, that the IIHS has not subjected the RX to a small overlap frontal-impact test as this gallery is created.

Standard safety equipment includes a Safety Connect telematics system with Automatic Collision Notification and an SOS Emergency Assistance button. Every 2014 Lexus RX includes these services for the first year of ownership, thereafter available by subscription. Options for the RX include a reversing camera, a Blind Spot Monitor, and Dynamic Radar Cruise Control with a Pre-Collision System that includes Forward Collision Warning.

My 2014 Lexus RX 350 test vehicle had the optional Mark Levinson premium audio system, which sounded terrific and provided high-quality knobs and buttons for primary functions.
