Getting firsthand information from an actual car owner is one sure way to get an idea of car performance once it leaves the lot. Autobytel features real consumer reviews that give the unbiased experience of a car.
Pros: It is easy to get into (not too high) and has a smooth ride.
Cons: The dash and controls could be nicer and easier to access.
Advice: Make this the last car you test drive and bring your checkbook!
I wanted the LS430, drove it and couldn't make a deal. At the last minute the manager said I could have the SUV for my price. I had driven and riden in several SUVs and had no intention of climbing up into a vehicle just to get bumped and thrown around at every turn! But,I reluctantly took a test drive. The RX300 had an incredibly smooth ride, cornered as easily as the sedan, had very good pick-up, a good turning radius and surprisingly comfortable seats. I was sold.Pros: The seats are very comfortable.
Cons: I like evrything.
Advice: Try to bring down the MSRP price down.
Lexus RX 300 is a very comfortable and spacious SUV. Parks well and Drives smoothly.Pros: Driver's seat comfort.
Cons: Only 4-way adjustable passenger seat.
Advice: Keep asking for passenger seat same as driver's.
I own a '99 RX-300. This summer will be our 6th cross-country trip (SC to WA). Most comfortable car I've owned. BUT, HOW CAN YOU CALL THIS A LUXURY VEHICLE WHEN YOU DON'T EVEN OFFER A FULLY ADJUSTABLE PASSENGER SEAT?? Offer a 10 way adjustable passenger seat, and I'll buy a new RX-300...but not until!!Pros: Best looking leather interior, reclining rear seats, acceleration
Cons: Doesn't look macho, no 7 seat option, some cheap switch gear
Advice: Drive it after an ML320 and you'll be sold
I drove the ML320 , Land Rover disco and Jeep Grand Cherokee first. The ML interior is still not up to Mercedes sedan standards, and while the ride and handling are OK, it doesn't drive as smooth as the Lexus. The Land Rover looks great, drives OK (but the V8 is not particularly powerful and it is thirsty), has great jump seats for the kids, but is too high to fit in the garage. The Jeep looks great, and with a 7/70 powertrain warranty you have some piece of mind, but with the I6 engine there is no freeway power and the interior is cramped. How often are you really going to go seriously offroading ? The X5 looks great, but it's expensive ($10K more than the Lexus), and too many reliability problem stories. I thought the Lexus was a 'chick's truck', but with the rear spoiler it actually looks OK. The interior looks great (by far the best of the ones I drove), although there are still a couple of cheap Toyota switch gear pieces. What sold me on the RX300 was the way it drives. Power is similar to the ML320 and X5, but it weighs a lot less. Drives almost like a sedan - and since you'll spend 90%+ of your time on-road this is great. Yep, it's not a true off-roader - but it'll probably handle snow and dirt roads just fine for those camping and skiing trips. Reliability history is second to none. The dealer gave me a great discount (don't pay more than $1K - $1.5K over invoice) - which wworks out $5K less than a similarly equipped Benz and $10K versus the X5. Sure, get the Jeep if you're really going off road, but as an all-rounder you can't beat the Lexus.Pros: The beautiful interior
Cons: Wind noise from the front vent of the sunroof.
Advice: Drive it only after you've driven another other SUV you're considering
I looked at two other vehicles, the Mercedes 320 and the Acura MDX. I was sold on the Acura until I seriously looked at and test drove the RX300. It's a nice looking vehicle that rides and handles better than some cars. It's very comfortable and the premium sound system is truly awesome. I feel I made the best choice and I'm enjoying my choice even after only 3 weeks of driving it.Pros: Navigational system.
Cons: Welded body seams show underneath on both sides of vehicle.
Advice: A nice luxury SUV.
Good acceleration, 0-60 in 8.5 seconds. Not as smooth a ride as one would expect, especially on California freeways.Pros: The comfey seats.
Cons: The bumpiness.
Advice: Buy it!
