2014 Jeep Patriot
Changes for the 2014 Jeep Patriot:
For 2014, the Jeep Patriot swaps its optional continuously variable transmission (CVT) for a new 6-speed automatic transmission in all models except those equipped with the Freedom Drive II Off-Road Package. Additionally, Jeep makes side-impact airbags standard equipment this year, and re-tunes the suspension for a better ride and handling character.
Model Lineup:
The 2014 Jeep Patriot is sold in Sport, Latitude, and Limited trim levels. The most affordable Patriot Sport model does not have standard air conditioning, and is one of the few new vehicles still offered with crank-‘em-yourself windows and push-‘em-yourself door locks.
Patriot Latitude models include these modern conveniences, plus remote keyless entry, heated side mirrors, heated front seats, a height adjuster for the driver’s seat, a front passenger’s seat that folds in half, and a useful 115-volt power outlet. The Latitude also gets a set of 17-inch aluminum wheels.
Limited models are equipped with leather, automatic climate control, an upgraded sound system, a power driver’s seat, and nicer trim in addition to a bigger 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine and a standard automatic transmission.
People who attend lots of tailgate parties might want to know that the Patriot is available with articulating speakers built into the rear liftgate, which can be positioned to blast your choice of media from the back of the Jeep.
Engines and Transmissions:
In Patriot Sport and Patriot Latitude models, a 158-horsepower, 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine drives the Jeep’s front wheels. Optional for the Sport and Latitude models, and standard for the Limited model, a 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine supplies 172 horsepower and 165 lb.-ft. of torque.
A 5-speed manual gearbox is standard for the Sport and Latitude models. This year, Jeep drops the continuously variable transmission (CVT) in favor of a new 6-speed automatic transmission with manual shift capability. The 6-speed automatic is optional for Sport and Latitude models, and standard for the Patriot Limited.
Equip a Patriot with the Freedom Drive II Off-Road Package, which contains all the “Trail Rated” hardware you need for serious 4-wheeling, and the Patriot still has a CVT, one specially engineered for this 4-wheel-drive system.
Fuel Economy Ratings:
With front-wheel drive, fuel economy ratings range from 24 mpg to 26 mpg in combined driving, with the automatic transmission returning the lower number regardless of engine size.
With 4-wheel drive, the Patriot returns 25 mpg with the 5-speed manual gearbox, 23 mpg with the automatic, and 21 mpg with the Freedom Drive II Off-Road Package.
Safety Ratings:
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) gives the 2014 Patriot a 3-star frontal impact crash-test rating and 3-star rollover resistance rating. The SUV also earns a “Poor” rating in the new small overlap frontal-impact test conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), but performs well in all other measures including the side-impact test, thanks to those newly standard front side-impact airbags.
Technology Highlights:
Aside from an optional Uconnect Bluetooth connectivity system and a navigation system, the Patriot offers little in the way of modern technologies.
