Changes for the 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee:
Jeep gives the iconic Grand Cherokee a thorough refresh for the 2014 model year. Aside from styling modifications, a new 8-speed automatic transmission arrives to improve gas mileage, and an EcoDiesel engine option further lifts fuel economy. A new luxury-themed Summit trim level joins the lineup, new infotainment and safety technologies debut, and Jeep upgrades the Grand Cherokee’s various traction systems for 2014.
The 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee is sold in Laredo, Limited, Overland, Summit, and SRT trim levels. Laredo models are nicely equipped, Limited models add leather and other upgrades. Overland models are equipped with an upscale exterior treatment, premium leather and wood inside the cabin, and an 8.4-inch touchscreen display with navigation and a premium sound system. The Summit model includes just about everything Jeep can throw at a Grand Cherokee, while the Grand Cherokee SRT is a track-ready version of this SUV, equipped with a more powerful engine and performance-tuned mechanical components.
Engines and Transmissions:
All Grand Cherokee models, except for the SRT, have a standard 290-horsepower, 3.6-liter V-6 engine. If you require 1,200 more pounds of trailer towing capacity, a 360-horsepower, 5.7-liter V-8 engine is optional, equipped with Fuel Saver Technology that allows the V-8 to operate on fewer cylinders in order to increase fuel economy. The Grand Cherokee SRT is endowed with a 470-horsepower, 6.4-liter V-8 engine and Fuel Saver Technology.
A new 3.0-liter diesel V-6 engine debuts for 2014, generating 240 horsepower and, more importantly, 420 lb.-ft. of torque way down low at 2,000 rpm. Towing capacity matches the 5.7-liter V-8 at 7,400 pounds.
All four engines are bolted to a new 8-speed automatic transmission for 2014, and while the SRT is equipped with a specially tuned 4-wheel-drive system with launch control, other Grand Cherokee models are offered with a choice between rear-wheel drive and three different 4-wheel-drive systems.
Fuel Economy Ratings:
In combined city and highway driving, the 2014 Grand Cherokee’s fuel economy ranges from 16 mpg with the 5.7-liter V-8 and 4WD to 20 mpg with the 3.6-liter V-6 and 2WD. The SRT is rated to get 15 mpg, and Jeep estimates that the new EcoDiesel model will return around 25 mpg.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration gives the 2014 Grand Cherokee an overall crash-test rating of 4 stars, and notes that the 2WD models are more prone to rollover than the 4WD models. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gives the Grand Cherokee its highest rating in all crash tests except the new small overlap frontal-impact test, for which the SUV has not been assessed.
In addition to a new 8.4-inch touchscreen infotainment system, the 2014 Grand Cherokee is offered with Uconnect Access mobile services, a reconfigurable instrument display screen, an air suspension with several height settings, and drivetrain systems that tailor power delivery to match driving conditions. New Forward Collision Warning and Crash Mitigation systems join Adaptive Cruise Control, Blind Spot Monitoring, and Rear Cross-Path Detection systems as safety-related options.
