About the 2014 Jeep Cherokee:
Replacing the boxy Liberty in Jeep’s lineup of “trail rated” SUVs, the 2014 Cherokee is based on the same global FIAT platform used for the Dodge Dart. A 4-cylinder engine and front-wheel drive are standard equipment. Now, before you draw any conclusions, keep one thing in mind: the Cherokee Trailhawk. In the Trailhawk model, Jeep turns its new nose-heavy crossover SUV into a real off-roader. Plus, people seeking more power can opt for a V-6 engine. Still interested? Read on.
The 2014 Cherokee lineup includes basic Sport, mid-grade Latitude, luxury-themed Limited, and rock-hopping Trailhawk trim levels.
Depending on the model selected, the Cherokee can be upgraded with leather, heated and ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, configurable electronic gauges, and a panoramic glass sunroof. Numerous infotainment and safety technologies are also available.
Engines and Transmissions:
A 184-horsepower, 2.4-liter 4-cylinder is standard equipment for all Cherokees, delivering power to the front wheels through a 9-speed automatic transmission. That’s not a typo. Nine speeds. If that’s not enough power, a 3.2-liter V-6 engine is optional for all models except the Sport, generating 271 horsepower and providing a 4,500-pound maximum tow rating.
Jeep offers three different 4-wheel-drive systems for the Cherokee. Jeep Active Drive I sends power to the rear wheels when the front wheels slip. Jeep Active Drive II includes a 2-speed transfer case with low-range gearing. Jeep Active Drive Lock adds a locking rear differential to the latter system.
All Cherokees equipped with 4WD get Selec-Terrain technology, offering the driver a choice between Auto, Snow, Sport, Sand/Mud, and Rock driving modes. All three systems also feature a rear-axle disconnect to help conserve fuel.
Fuel Economy Ratings:
Depending on the engine and drivetrain choice, the 2014 Cherokee returns between 18 mpg in the city for the Trailhawk 4WD V-6 model and 31 mpg on the highway for the front-drive model with the 4-cylinder engine. Combined driving ratings range from 20 mpg to 25 mpg.
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gives the Cherokee a “Good” rating in all crash tests for which it has been assessed. The IIHS had not given the Cherokee a rating in the tough new small overlap frontal-impact test as this summary was written. Front Crash Prevention is rated “Basic.”
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) had not tested the Cherokee when this summary was written.
The Cherokee is one of the first vehicles to offer a wireless smartphone charging pad. The SUV also provides mobile Internet access via the available Uconnect Access via Mobile system, and the Uconnect 8.4 color touchscreen infotainment system includes Bluetooth calling and music streaming, voice-to-text messaging capability, and more. An optional ParkSense Park Assist system steers the Cherokee into both parallel and perpendicular parking spaces.
Safety upgrades include a reversing camera, Advanced Brake Assist, Adaptive Cruise Control, Forward Collision Warning with Crash Mitigation, Lane Departure Warning, Blind Spot Monitoring, Cross Path Detection, and 911 Assist calling.
