The redesigned 2016 Jaguar XF enjoys one enormous advantage over the first generation version of this premium sedan: it no longer has to pull double-duty as both entry-point to the Jaguar brand and mid-size luxury competitor taking on the world's best. The imminent arrival of the Jaguar XE compact four-door relieved Jaguar designers of their responsibility to satisfy two very different customers at the same time, and the end result is an XF that is larger inside, more comfortable to drive, and more sure of its place in the world of high-end automobiles. Let's take a look at 10 things you need to know about the 2016 Jaguar XF.

1. The 2016 Jaguar XF Is All-New, But Doesn't Look It

When the Jaguar XF first hit the scene, it was a marked departure for the automaker in the styling department. Flash-forward to 2016 and the Jaguar XF makes less of a splash, as it features a strong resemblance to its predecessor - but it would be a mistake to think that the sedan has simply undergone a facelift. Jaguar has in fact carried over no sheet metal between the two generations, which means the similarities are entirely intentional and not the result of any cost-saving measures. Confident in its largely successful design language, the lower and somewhat shorter 2016 XF continues the brand's thoroughly modern visual template.

2. The 2016 Jaguar XF's Aluminum-Intensive Platform Keeps Things Light

Helping to preserve the 2016 Jaguar XF's cat-like reflexes out on the road is the decision to re-up when it came to the use of aluminum in the construction of the sedan's platform. Almost 30 percent more rigid than the car that it replaces, three-quarters of the Jaguar XF's unibody chassis is composed of the lightweight metal, with the notable exceptions of the door skins and trunk lid (which are steel to help better distribute the vehicle's mass). The heaviest version of the XF still tips the scales at over 4,000 lbs, but even in that configuration it's roughly 250 lbs more lithe than the original model.

3. The 2016 Jaguar XF Offers More Interior Space

Remember when we said that the 2016 Jaguar XF was marginally shorter, overall, as compared to the 2015 edition? Fortunately for rear seat riders the shave was done at the bumpers, for the Jaguar XF's wheelbase has been extended by a full two inches. There's now a half-inch of extra legroom available to those sitting out back, which comes hand-in-hand with an inch more knee room and an additional inch above your head. The pushed-out passenger compartment addresses one of the most common complaints about the last XE, and the true mid-size proportions made possible by the redesign make the Jaguar a stronger competitor in its segment.

4. The 2016 Jaguar XF Features Two Supercharged V-6 Options

Initially, the 2016 Jaguar XF will feature a pair of supercharged V-6 options available under its hood. Base models will offer 340 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque from a 3.0-liter unit, while the magic of engine tuning extracts 380 ponies from the same unit on higher trim levels (while also throwing an extra 7lb-ft of twist into the mix). These engines carry over unchanged from the year before, which means they come matched with the same eight-speed automatic transmission and provide fuel economy of 20-mpg in stop and go driving and 30-mpg during highway cruising. In a straight line, the 380 horsepower XF dispatches the sprint to 60-mph in a brisk 5.0-seconds.

5. The 2016 Jaguar XF Will Debut A Diesel Drivetrain

On the menu for the 2016 Jaguar XF once the first few shipments have made it to the showroom floor is a new turbodiesel engine. Already available on the European market for the past several years, the American version of Jaguar XF's 2.0-liter turbodiesel motor has been tapped to produce 180 horsepower and 317 lb-ft of torque from its four-cylinder design. Also matched with an eight-speed autobox, the XF diesel's official fuel mileage has yet to be release - but it wouldn't be unreasonable to peg the highway figure at somewhere north of 40-mpg.

6. The 2016 Jaguar XF Makes All-Wheel Drive Optional

All-wheel drive has spread across almost the entire spectrum of Jaguar's product line, and the 2016 Jaguar XF is no different. For its redesign, the XF's AWD system has undergone a few changes to improve efficiency, with the most notable being the move from a gear-based transfer case to a chain drive, which is both lighter and quieter than the previous setup. Jaguar makes use of a torque balance that favors sending power to the rear wheels in most driving situations in order to preserve a sporty feel from the driver's seat, with torque shuttled to the front axles when wheel spin is detected.

7. The 2016 Jaguar XF Borrows From Line-Up Mates to Improve Suspension, Handling

The 2016 Jaguar XF shares its new platform with the upcoming F-Pace crossover, which will be the first large-scale people mover from the British marque. This means that the XF also gets an assist from Jaguar stablemates like the XE and the F-Type in terms of its suspension setup, with the former contributing independent rear layout and the latter pitching in up front. The car will additionally feature an adaptive suspension option that will automatically adapt to road conditions and driving style in order to further enhance grip, stability, and comfort.

8. The 2016 Jaguar XF Should Spawn R and R-S Models

You may have noticed a distinct lack of V-8 power from the list of 2016 Jaguar XF drivetrains and found that unusual, especially given the presence of eight-cylinder motors on older versions of the car. Fear not: there will be thunderously fun versions of the Jaguar XF available in the near future, with an R model featuring a supercharged V-8 topping 500 horsepower a near-certainty. Less concrete, but certainly likely, will be the presence of an XFR-S super sport sedan with track-ready tuning for both the chassis and whatever massive lump is deposited in the engine bay.

9. The 2016 Jaguar XF Updates Its Tech Quotient

The 2016 Jaguar XF might not be on the same autonomous driving kick as some of its peers from BMW and Mercedes-Benz, but that doesn't mean it hasn't benefited from significant investment in the latest high-tech features. Notable is its InTouch infotainment system, which can be further upgraded to InTouch Pro to provide a fully digital gauge cluster for the driver to go with the larger touch screen mounted on the center stack. Also along for the ride are an app that offers remote access to climate control features as well as an in-car wireless Internet feature, adaptive cruise control, and an available head-up display.

10. The 2016 Jaguar XF Keeps Pricing Competitive

Jaguar has long been able to keep its prices more affordable than many of the German luxury models it does battle with on a daily basis, and the same is true of the 2016 Jaguar XF. A base XF 35t Premium stats at an MSRP of $51,900, which is significantly cheaper than a comparable six-cylinder BMW 5 Series or Audi S6. This trend continues throughout the XF line-up, with an all-wheel drive XF S checking in at the top of the scale with an MSRP of $65,700 - a figure that provides an even starker contrast against the more expensive rivals going head-to-head with Jaguar.
