Auto shows usually have an interesting assortment of alternative fuel vehicles, and the 2014 Los Angeles Auto Show is no exception. Autobytel's Editor-in-Chief, Michelle Naranjo, checked out the recent assortment at the LA Auto Show and gives her thoughts on the Fab Five Alternative Fuel Vehicles, starting with the Toyota Mirai. This sedan's styling is head-turning, but the drivetrain's the really intriguing part. This Toyota makes power from hydrogen right on board, getting 300 miles per tank without any carbon emissions. Luxury hybrids are becoming more common, and Mercedes-Benz is offering up its new S500 Plug-In Hybrid as proof. This Benz is powered by a twin-turbocharged V6 engine that's paired to an electric motor for a total of 436 horsepower. BMW's also testing its definitions of power and luxury with its i8, a hybrid that features a turbocharged gas engine with 231 horsepower, paired to an electric motor with 131 horsepower, for up to 75 miles per hour on electric power alone. VW's bringing its eGolf across the Atlantic. This 115-horsepower fully electric hot hatch looks and feels a lot like a regular Golf, and will be available soon. And finally, Volvo is adding a new XC90 to the brand's refreshed SUV lineup, except this one's a plug-in. The electric XC90 offers all of Volvo's comfort features in a 400-horsepower vehicle that can go 25 miles on a charge.
