When the Japanese automaker Nissan brought their lightweight rear wheel drive 240SX to market, little did they know that one day the hamburger brand would take over the Honda Civic's venerable role as the tuner ride of choice. While much of the demand for these 20 year old used cars comes directly from the sideways sport of drifting, and it's that same activity fueled by eager first timers that has led to a scarcity of clean examples. Drifting is very hard on cars, sliding sideways on a banked oval at 100 MPH puts added stresses on a chassis that they were never designed to handle; and then there are the walls, and oh how they like to eat shiny new race cars. Seeing the need for an affordable rear wheel drive sports car, other manufacturers have been quick to fill the gap once filled by driftings go to Nissan 240SX. While Nissan has showed its hand with the IDX Nismo concept car, a retro throwback to the Datsun 510, their future is full of potential. But if they wait too long teens teeming with too much testosterone will soon be perusing used car pages for cars like the Hyundai Genesis Coupe, Scion FR-S and Subaru BRZ. Heck, even Kia is going to be getting in on the action with their GT4 Stinger Concept.
