Changes for the 2014 Ford Fusion:

For 2014, the Fusion family sedan gets a new turbocharged 1.5-liter EcoBoost 4-cylinder engine, replacing the 1.6-liter EcoBoost in most applications. The new engine makes about the same horsepower and torque as the engine it replaces, while returning slightly better fuel economy.

Also, the 2014 Fusion is offered with optional inflatable rear seatbelts, can be painted in new Dark Side and Sunset colors, and can be outfitted with a Dune-color interior in combination with Sterling Gray paint. The SE Luxury Package adds keyless entry with push-button starting, and the Titanium Interior Appearance Package adds premium leather in a Brick Red color. Ventilated front seats and a heated steering wheel are optional for Titanium models for 2014.

Model Lineup:

The 2014 Ford Fusion is offered in S, SE, and Titanium trim levels, configured as a basic sedan all the way to a sophisticated luxury car. The Fusion Hybrid is offered in the same trims, while the Fusion Energi plug-in hybrid is sold only as the SE and Titanium. The Fusion Hybrid and Energi are covered in separate articles.

Engines and Transmissions:

Within the standard Fusion lineup, four different engines are available. The Fusion S and SE come standard with a 175-horsepower, 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine. The Fusion Titanium is equipped with a 240-horsepower, 2.0-liter turbocharged EcoBoost 4-cylinder engine.

As an option, the Fusion SE swaps out its 2.5-liter for one of three turbocharged EcoBoost 4-cylinder engines. The 1.6-liter makes 177-182 horsepower, depending on the fuel it is fed, and more torque much lower in the rev range than the standard 2.5-liter 4-cylinder. It is offered only with a 6-speed manual gearbox.

A new 1.5-liter EcoBoost engine is paired with the automatic transmission, and while final power figures are not available as this article is written, Ford says it makes about the same horsepower and torque as the 1.6-liter engine while returning superior fuel economy.

The Fusion Titanium’s 2.0-liter EcoBoost 4-cylinder engine is also optional for the Fusion SE.

Front-wheel drive is standard for all Fusion models. All-wheel drive is optional for the SE with the 2.0-liter EcoBoost engine, and for the Titanium models.

Fuel Economy Ratings:

Not counting the Fusion Hybrid models, this family sedan is rated to get anywhere between 22 mpg in the city with the 2.0-liter EcoBoost engine and AWD, to 37 mpg on the highway with the 1.6-liter EcoBoost and the manual gearbox. Combined fuel economy ratings range from 25 mpg with AWD to 29 mpg with the manual transmission.

Safety Ratings:

The 2014 Fusion receives a 5-star overall crash-test rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has not rated the 2014 Fusion as this is written, but last year the car received a “Top Safety Pick Plus” rating thanks to an “Acceptable” rating in the new small overlap frontal-impact crash test.

Technology Highlights:

From MyFord Touch infotainment to inflatable rear seatbelts, the 2014 Fusion is offered with a long list of standard and available convenience and safety technologies.
