Pros: Not being low to the ground as a car.My Ford Explorer has been more then I thought. Everyone comments on what a nice car it is.
Cons: noiseygood car
Pros: Ride and Handling
Cons: Gas mileage and center console storage
Advice: Drive one for a few days before purchase it.This is my third Explorer and overall I happy with my purchase. I've owned 1997 and 2000 Explorer's prior to this 2006. The best features noted are the improved ride, acceleration and handling. The features which have not been improved or are a step backwards are worse gas mileage, moved controls for 4X4 to the lower center dash and on the passenger side, (prefer left side of steering wheel), driver storage (moved shift lever to console which took away console shelf space) smaller glove compartment, higher step up and loss of rear and passenger side vision due to higher seat backs. The feature which needs change or should be eliminated from an option is the finish on the chrome wheels. This premium wheel (std Limited opt on EB) is coated with a chrome film which peels if cut (carwash or tire change). I like the explorer but do have concerns whether I made a smart purchase.
Pros: Interior design
Cons: Gas Milage
Advice: Much improved over previous models. Don't see how imports are any better. This vehicle is awesome. There are just a few gripes. The gas milage is very poor in my opinion. I have a 6 cylinder, four wheel drive and get about 15 mpg. Should be better. The door pulls are in an aweful location. I understand that Ford has corrected this on the 2007 models. The turn signal stalk is located at a strange angle but I am sure I will get used to it. Other than those griped I love this vehicle. Everything seems to be a great quality. From the fit and finish to the ride. It is a very quiet vehicle and drives very smooth. Good acceleration (coming from a guy who traded in his Mustang GT). Logical controls. Good storage. Kids love the back seat and third row seat. Third row folds flush with floor. Good braking. Average to above average styling on the outside. I LOVE the interior styling. The door latch on the inside is unique. Some will like it, other will hate it. I like it. Seats are comfortable.
Pros: How quite and smooth yet nimble the ride is.
Cons: The stereo needs a more midrange.
Advice: I would highly recommend this car especially if you need seating for 7 and the toughness of a truck.I have owned a 2006 Explorer XLT with the 4.6L V8 engine and 3 rows of seats for 2 months now. I was impressed from the first time I drove the car. It was far beyond my expectations. I was amazed that a body on frame 'truck' could be so quiet, smooth and effortless to drive. This rides better and is quieter that the Lexus SUVs I have tried. A coworker of mine who is a European car fan was also amazed at how quite and smooth the ride is. Yet there is plenty of power with a nice growl from the V8 when needed. I have had seven adults fit comfortable in it. Even the 6 foot guy in the 3rd row said it was surprisingly roomy. I was aware of the unusual door pulls before I looked at the car and despite my concerns I don't even notice them now. I have had no problems with the fit, finish and quality of the construction so far. Out of all of the SUVs that I have owned this is by far the best.
Pros: New quiet interior and towing capacity.
Cons: Although improved from last year, Gas mileage. Lack of Sirius radio as an option.
Advice: Concider the 4x2 as an option. The gas mileage is better.I really enjoy the updated seating and interior. Ford plans to fix the door handle placement next year. I am getting used to it. The ride is nice and interior is quiet. I have a boat and a camper. The Explorer tows well. I found that several SUV's were built on a car chassis. I shopped foreign and domestic vehicles. This vehicle is the best 'Utility vehicle for the price.' The engineering of the frame and suspension cannot be matched.
Pros: Comfortable seats with 10 way power and heat
Cons: Door pulll and door opening handles are designed by idiots and put in the least accessible spots
Advice: Think about the poor fuel economy if you have any concerns about the price of gas!Slight stumble on initial cold drive off. Fuel economy fair to poor in city (12 mpg) and sub-par on Hwy (17). However, this is a sweet vehicle to drive. Very comfortable and handles well for a relatively large vehicle. Gripes - turn signal/wiper stalk is way too high to reach. Idiotic placement of door unlock and door pull handles make for problems when trying to catch a door that suddenly swings open. Dash is too flat, reflects on windshield. Other than that I'm really enjoying this SUV.
