    2004 Ford Explorer - Eddie Bauer 4.0L (250A) 4x4

Pros: Satellite radio and DVD player

    Cons: gas mileage, transmission

Advice: Be careful when you buy a Ford!

Where do I start? After owning the vehicle for 4 months the engine fail safe mode light came on. I quickly called my local Ford service center. Since the light was now off all they could do was run the computer to check for problems. No problems were found. A year later, 18 months of owning it, the engine fail safe light was back. Again I went running to my service center. I was advised I had problems with my computer system and the wiring. The issue also affected my 4x4 high lights. Also my back ABS brake sensors had to be replaced. Now it is 3 weeks later and I found out that I have a bad transmission! In addition the gas mileage is terrible! I'm looking very seriously in dumping this vehicle even if I have to take a lose on it.

    2004 Ford Explorer - XLT 4.0L (220A) 4x4

Pros: The ride has much improved.

Cons: The drive train is terrible.

Advice: Do not buy it .

In general the car is very good. But beware of major transmission problems. It has delayed down shifting, buckling when coasting and slamming and hesitation while shifting into reverse gear and back into drive. Ford's recall fix of adding a transmission fluid additive did not work. Actually it got worse. The dealers have put their head into the sand over this issue. I also had the rear differential replaced and now it is leaking. The front rotors are now warped after only 17000 miles. !!!!!

    2004 Ford Explorer - Limited 4.6L (265A) 4x4

    Pros: Heated seats

Cons: Blind spots in the mirrors, had to add the bubble mirrors on both sides.

Advice: Wait to see if they fix the transmission before buying the 2005.

Nice car but has transmission problems. It has delayed shifting into reverse then clunks in hard. Also clunks when downshifting when coasting to a stop. The recall notice to change the fluid didn't solve the problem. Dealership has their head in the sand... and can't or won't fix it.

    2004 Ford Explorer - XLT 4.0L (220A) 4x4

    Pros: Feeling of safety

Cons: The usual in any truck - Big tank means more gas $$

Advice: Test drive it for yourself, worth it if you can get a good price

It rides really smooth. The sound from the engine is very minimal considering the motor size. It has plenty of acceleration for a truck of its size. Great overall look and feel. Also managed to get a great deal, only $21,500!

    2004 Ford Explorer - XLT 4.0L (220A) 4x4

Pros: I guess the back seat.

Cons: The ride. Very bouncy and jolting over speedbumps.

Advice: BUy if you can live with very odd, and uncomfortable ride.

Nothing much to say. Went in the car with friends. Went over many bumps, and ' floated' , went over speedbumps got jolted in back seat. Bad enough ride to turn down for a Good SUV.

    2004 Ford Explorer - Eddie Bauer 4.0L (250A) 4x4

Pros: Sitting position with commanding view of the road, tight turning circle, reverse sensors.

Cons: Third row seat could be split. Needs cargo net when rear hatch is opened.

Advice: Great if you need 7 seats and wnt to feel save on the road.

Has good torque with 6 cylinders. Can hear engine sound under acceleration, not a bad thing. Provides a secure feeling on snowy roads and is solid like a rock, no slipping or sliding. Original BFGoodrich tires are surprisinly quiet (would prefer Michelins. Message center provides useful data and avg fuel data seems to be accurate. Heating system warms inside quickly (just tested at 25 centigrade below zero( -13 Farenheit) rear outlets are useful option, heated front seats and dual controls help. Getting in and out of the truck real easy when you're 6 ft. Highway driving is easy, Truck points straight down the road, few corrections required.
