Pros: Stereo System, Moonroof, Whole Appearance & Comfort
Cons: A bit bumpy, but I guess that is what I get after driving a car!
Advice: Test drive it, you'll love it too!! Go for all the extras, they make it even better!!I love my new SUV!!! This has everything I was looking for in a fun yet practical vehicle. I got the upper end model with a 6 CD changer, moonroof, and awesome color. I couldn't have came upon a better vehicle at another time. The look is sleek and cool, you will be turning heads in this one especially if you have the stereo system cranked up. Can't say anything bad about my new car, I can't expect to have gotten anything else!!!
Pros: Standard 6 Cylinder
Cons: Plastic front seat recline levers. They used to be metal.
Advice: Test drive it. Its a 2DR with a shorter wheelbase so it does drive a little differently from 4DR SUVs.I am a repeat Explorer Sport owner. I previously had a 1999 model. Now on to the 2002. For someone who doesn't need 4 doors, wants an SUV but not a land barge, likes a sporty style, and wants 6 cylinders... I don't think the Sport can be beat. I really liked Chevy's new Trailblazer and have always loved the look of Toyota's 4Runner. But, I kept coming back to the Explorer Sport. It had the major features that I wanted for a lower price. Differences from 1999 to 2002? Much smoother ride. Lower ground clearance, larger wheels, quieter engine. Rear console radio controls and air vents on the 2002. White guage background versus black. My 1999 model had slightly quicker acceleration. I believe the gear ratios on the 2002 may be different from my 1999, but the power is still there when you need it. I did notice a few interior pieces on the 2002 that are plastic now versus metal on my 1999. However, overall I do think the 2002 is an improvement. It feels more refined. Bottom line, this is a great little SUV. You can buy this truck in the low $20Ks and still get a standard 6 cylinder engine. In my experience, you have to spend more on other models to get that same power.
Cons: back end view
Advice: test driveIt was a nice ride
Pros: Comfort, Styling, and brakes
Cons: Pricey, but well worth it!
Advice: Test drive the others, and then be amazed by the smoothness of the Explorer! This is an unbelievable vehicle! I thought it would be a tough switch, coming from my last car (a 3000gt) but after driving the Explorer, I don't even miss the Mitsubishi. The brakes are unbelievable! The stereo is also amazing. The transmission is so smooth, the Explorer seems a little weak until you realize just how fast you are going. The Explorer has plenty of power, they just did a really good job hiding it. The interior comfort, fit and finish, and exterior are superior to any of the other mid-range suv's. I love driving this wonderful machine. You do feel some of the bumps, but it is an suv; although I think it drives better than most cars. I can't think of anything I would change. I used to think imports were superior, but Ford has changed my mind about the quality of American vehicles. Congratulations Ford for creating a near perfect suv!
Pros: Exterior looks, interior comfort, stereo.
Cons: a little high priced (30k), could have a little more power, small back seats.
Advice: Drive it, listen to stereo, get the choice trim levelThis is a great mid range, mid size SUV. I love almost everything about it. It looks so nice from the outside with the choice trim level wheels and the two tone is nice to. It is the perfect height and looks well balanced. The interior is really luxurious with the leather, sunroof, and the stereo system is awesome. I had a 99 integra before the explorer sport and I was worried I would have trouble driving a bigger vehicle but it is no problem. I was surprised at the great turing radius and it has enough power to do whatever you want with it. The only bad things about it are I think the back seats are kind of small and it could have some more power, I have to raally stomp on the gas to go anywhere quickly like the freeway onramp. This is the perfect car for someone who wants something bigger than a car but smaller than a full size SUV
Pros: Awesome safe brakes
Cons: Average acceleration
Advice: This is a tiny wheelbase SUV, make SURE the handling suits you!I test drove an Explorer Sport with the Choice option package. I'm 5'8' and sitting in the back seat with the front seats fully back was still comfortable, and the rear A/C vents were great. The fit and finish of the vehicle was excellent, no problems or flaws spotted. Considering how small a vehicle the Sport is I was expecting much better acceleration with 205 horsepower under the hood. The acceleration was good but hardly standout, at least with the auto transmission. I noticed some shimmy, and bumps in the road tend to knock this small wheelbase SUV of course somewhat. I would expect that from an SUV with a 100 inch wheelbase. The brakes were flawless. The air conditioning was very powerful and relatively quiet. The standard 16' alloys wheels were great looking and the Michelin tires were a pleasent bonus. Considering the size of the vehicle the sticker price of 23,650 was a little steep and the way Explorers depreciate, make sure this is a keeper before you buy.
Pros: Exterior look and available Leather package.
Cons: Wind noise at speeds above 55 mph
Advice: I'd suggest test driving at typical driving speed of 65-70 mph to test for wind noise. The Explorer Sport was a wonderful test drive. It was a smooth ride, much smoother than your typical 'pickup truck' feel of an SUV. Handling is good and stopping power with the ABS braking system is excellent. The only fault I can find with this vehicle is the increase of wind noise at vehicle speeds over 55 mph. I love the looks of the vehicle and the available leather seating package is a nice addition. Excellent sound system. The vehicle I test drove had a premium sound system with 6 CD in-dash changer. The sound system was also satellite radio ready. Very fun to drive and hauling cargo is a snap. The 60/40 split folding rear seats are easy to handle as well.
