Over the years, pickup trucks have made the transition from simple work vehicles equipped with single front bench seats and painted metal dashboards to luxurious crew cabs with leather-lined space for five passengers and onboard entertainment systems that rival the local cineplex. But Dodge doesn’t stop there. Instead, it builds what it calls the Mega Cab, and “mega” it is. Offering 72.2 cubic feet of enclosed cabin storage space, an amount typically only found in SUVs, and 44.2 inches of rear seat legroom, more than a Maybach ultra-luxury sedan, the new 2006 Dodge Ram Mega Cab is the next step in the progression of truck design. The Dodge Ram Mega Cab is stretched 22 inches over the Ram Quad Cab, and rear passengers benefit most from the new space. The Mega Cab includes reclining and folding rear seats, lots of extra rear legroom, roomy bulkhead storage compartments, and improved headroom for rear passengers. Clearly, the new Dodge Ram Mega Cab has the most spacious and versatile interior of any truck on the market. Consumers no longer think of pickup trucks as work vehicles – and manufacturers like Dodge are designing them to accommodate a new range of personal-use needs.

Mega Cab Dually

The 2006 Dodge Ram Mega Cab Dually expands the standard model’s rear wheel track to six-feet, four-inches and offers increased payload capacity as well as more stability when towing large trailers. Powering the Mega Cab Dually is a 5.9-liter Cummins turbodiesel, which makes 610 lb.-ft. of torque at a low 1,600 rpm. A heavy-duty 11.5-inch solid rear axle and longitudinal leaf springs combined with gas-charged monotube shocks are responsible for the majority of the Dodge Ram Mega Cab Dually’s ability to tow large loads.

Dually Trim Levels

The 2006 Dodge Ram Mega Cab Dually is offered only as a 3500-series truck in SLT or Laramie trim with 2WD or 4WD and with your choice of a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission. The standard SLT trim includes air conditioning, a CD player, an overhead console with a trip computer and compass, cruise control, power door locks with keyless entry, power windows, and four-wheel disc brakes with ABS. The biggest upgrades with the Laramie trim are leather seats, a power sliding rear window, dual-zone automatic climate control, a heated six-way power driver’s seat, and 17-inch chrome wheels.

Engines

Standard issue on the 2006 Dodge Ram Mega Cab 1500 and 2500 is a 5.7-liter Hemi V8 linked to a five-speed automatic transmission. This V8 makes 345 horsepower and 375 lb.-ft. of torque. Available as an option on the 2500 and standard on the 3500 is a 5.9-liter Cummins turbodiesel with 325 horsepower and a stump-pulling 610 lb.-ft. of torque. The Cummins is available with either a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission.

Interior

The 2006 Dodge Ram Mega Cab boasts the largest truck interior in its class. With 72.2 cubic feet of rear cargo space with the back seats folded flat, the Mega Cab provides more enclosed storage area than some SUVs. Although front passengers benefit from the Mega Cab’s increased interior size, it’s the back seat passengers that really reap the rewards. With 44.2 inches of rear legroom, the Mega Cab has more stretch-out space than a Maybach ultra-luxury sedan.

Rear Seating

Rear seat passengers benefit most from the 2006 Dodge Ram Mega Cab’s bigger interior. With 44.2 inches of legroom and 40.5 inches of headroom, along with reclining split rear seating, backseat travelers get to ride in comfort as well as style. Add the overhead DVD entertainment system and you are sure to keep the kids quiet until you have reached your destination.

Storage

No space inside the 2006 Dodge Ram Mega Cab goes unused. Designers have incorporated useful hidden storage bins and hooks behind the rear seats. The split rear seats also fold flat, providing a large area for additional storage. The ability to fold just one or more of the seats enables rear seat passengers to ride along with smaller cargo that needs to be stored in the cab.
