Dodge Performance Is Alive and Well in the Neon Sedan

The second generation Dodge Neon continues to offer an attractive combination of size, fuel economy and power. Available only as a 4-door sedan, the Neon can comfortably seat four adult passengers; five in a pinch. The Neon's long wheelbase translates into generous trunk and rear seat legroom while also providing a surprisingly smooth ride. Powered by a 132-horsepower 2.0-liter engine, the Neon bests most of its competition when it comes to all out performance while still delivering an EPA estimated 28 mpg in the city and 34 mpg on the highway. All Neons come standard with a 5-speed manual transmission, but for an additional $800, a 4-speed automatic can be added.

On the road, the Neon can turn even the shortest trip into a fun little romp. The taut chassis and firm steering make this a great driver's car, and the willing engine seems to have power on reserve at any rpm. The Neon is not as refined or quiet as some Japanese competitors, but it is by no means substandard or uncomfortable to drive. The seats are nicely bolstered and have a good amount of travel to help accommodate taller passengers. There is also a long list of upgrades, including a Premium sound system, side air bags, alloy wheels and front power windows (the rear windows are manually operated).

The Neon is available in five trim levels that cover everything from basic transportation to miniature street racer. The base model comes standard with air conditioning, AM/FM stereo with cassette, dual side mirrors and tilt wheel; the SE, ES and SXT models add even more standard features with prices ranging from $13,000 to $16,000. At the other end of the spectrum are the Neon ACR and R/T. Both feature a high output, 150-horsepower 2.0-liter engine, upgraded wheels, tires and suspensions and premium interior trim. The R/T gets special ground effects and a large rear wing. Both the ACR and R/T Neon top out around $17,000 and $19,000 respectively. The Neon is backed by a 3-year/36,000 mile bumper-to-bumper warranty.
