If you’re a small car owner, no doubt you’ve gone to Ikea, gazed wistfully at a piece of furniture and sadly thought, "Forget it. There’s no way that will fit in my car." In actuality, you can fit an impressive array of larger Ikea products in a small compact car, according to Daniela Rivera, marketing specialist for Ikea’s Costa Mesa, CA location,  “Ikea's products are compressed and flat packed so you can fit them in your car and take them home that day,” Rivera said. “It’s all part of Ikea’s sustainability mission.” To test this philosophy, we asked Rivera to identify Ikea's most iconic products for us to fit into our small car; in this case, a 2015 Honda Fit*. The results were quite surprising, and proof that there's no more reason for holding back at Ikea! *Fold down the Honda Fit’s 2nd-row “magic seat,” and you get 52.7 cu ft. of volume.

Who would have imagined you could fit a whole sofa into a small hatchback? And it was a fairly easy fit at that.

For our second load, we were able to fit two accent chairs and matching footstools, and an entire 5-piece dining set into the Honda Fit. And surprisingly, we didn't have to touch the front seat, leaving plenty of room for the passenger.

We were able to fit the greatest amount of furniture in our third load, including a bed, mattress, dresser, coffee table, bookcase, desk, and shelf unit. We did have to fold back the front passenger seat to utilize the passenger space, so don't count on providing a lift for any helpers with this load. With just the bed frame and mattress, however, there was plenty of extra space.
