10 Best Coupes for Tall Drivers

Being tall has its advantages, but it has distinct disadvantages when it comes to finding the right coupe to drive. Depending on how you’re proportioned, you may find that the legroom is cramped, or you may be forced to drive with your hair brushing against the headliner. Not every coupe is the same, though. Some are better for tall drivers than others.

In determining which coupes are best for tall drivers, we first must define a coupe. A coupe is a two-door car with a hard top and a back seat. Some manufacturers claim “coupe styling” for four-door models, but those are not coupes. We’re not including those, nor roadsters or models with back seats that are vestigial, and we’re not cheating by including the ultimate tall driver cars – convertibles.

2018 Bentley Continental GT

Tall drivers who also are well-heeled will love the 2018 Bentley Continental GT. Not only is it absolutely gorgeous and distinctive, it also is supremely luxurious for its driver, front-seat passenger, and two adult rear-seat passengers. Powered by a 6.0-liter twin-turbocharged W12 engine that sends 626 hp and 664 lb-ft of torque to all four wheels via a dual-clutch eight-speed automatic transmission, the Continental GT can go from 0-60 mph in 3.6 seconds on the way to a top speed of 207 mph.

The current spec sheet doesn’t specify front-seat legroom, but the generous interior dimensions will accommodate a tall driver very well – and in great comfort. Prices start at $218,400, so you’d better have a tall wallet to go along with your long torso.

2018 BMW M4

There are few coupes that deliver as much driving pleasure as the 2018 BMW M4. Thankfully, the M4 has interior dimension and proportion that favor the tall driver.

When equipped with a six-speed manual transmission, the front-engine/rear-wheel drive M4 has a near-perfect 52.3/47.7 front/rear weight distribution, while weighing in at 3,625 lbs. With a 3.0-liter M TwinPower Turbo inline six-cylinder engine (425 hp/406 lb-ft of torque) under the hood, the M4 is capable of scooting from 0 – 60 mph in 4.1 seconds. If that doesn’t make you feel taller, you’re not doing it often enough. M4 coupe starts at $69,150.

2018 Chevrolet Camaro

Even though it looks impossibly low and compressed from the outside, the 2018 Chevrolet Camaro actually is quite a good choice for a tall driver, especially one with long legs – though it may be wise to choose an automatic transmission, in order to maximize leg and foot space.

Camaro can be fitted with a wide range of powertrain options, from a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder all the way to a 6.2-liter supercharged V8, and with starting prices from $26,900 up to $62,495. A tall driver at the start of a new career conceivably could begin with a 1LS Camaro, and with some success at work, end up in a ZL1 – a tall order, certainly, but worth the stretch.

2018 Dodge Challenger

Tall drivers still want to look cool in their coupes, and you can’t look much cooler than you will behind the wheel of a 2018 Dodge Challenger. Not only is the Challenger one of the best-looking way-back machines on the road right now, it is pleasantly roomy for both driver and front-seat passenger, and surprisingly accommodating for two adults in the second row (and maybe a kid in the middle).

If performance is on your mind, Challenger can muster the horsepower to compress your vertebrae at launch, especially in SRT Hellcat trim (starting at $65,495), where it packs a 707-hp punch from its supercharged 6.2-liter HEMI V8 engine. Base SXT Challengers, equipped with a 305-hp Pentastar V6 starting at $27,295, also can transport your tall body around in style.

2018 Fiat 500

Perhaps the inclusion of the 2018 FIAT 500 might surprise you. It is a tiny hatchback coupe with a very efficient interior layout that leaves room for all but the tallest of drivers. Perhaps best of all, the cost of entry is not tall at all, with starting prices beginning at just $14,995.

The 500’s front doors open all the way to a 70-degree angle, which gives tall drivers a little bit more space to get their legs and feet inside. And thanks to the 500’s narrow 64.1-inch overall width, you can park in a normal spot and still have enough room to open the door all the way – something that’s often a challenge in larger coupes, which have correspondingly longer doors and wider bodies.

2018 Ford Mustang

Mustang has been a perennial favorite coupe for more than 50 years. It may have slipped under the radar of tall drivers, but it shouldn’t – it has one of the longest front legroom measurements of any of the coupes in our roundup.

Front headroom is just adequate, so Mustang won’t be right for every tall driver, but like the other muscle coupes (Chevy Camaro and Dodge Challenger), it can be ordered in a dizzying variety of configurations, starting at $25,680 for a 2.3-liter EcoBoost Fastback and going all the way up to $64,740 for a 5.2-liter V8 Shelby GT350R. Mustang got an exterior makeover for the 2018 model year, and it is better-looking than ever.

2018 Honda Civic Coupe

Just because you’re tall, it doesn’t mean that you have to buy a big car. In fact, the sub-compact 2018 Honda Civic Coupe is just 176.9 inches long, yet still delivers more than 42 inches of legroom for its driver, along with 38.2 inches of headroom.

There’s enough legroom for a tall driver to operate the standard six-speed manual transmission, but the highly efficient continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) does such a good job that you needn’t bother with the manual. Civic Coupe starts at $19,340 and goes up to $26,425. You also can choose a hot rod Civic Si Coupe (starting at $24,100) with a 205-hp turbocharged 1.5-liter engine, but you’ll sacrifice 1.7 inches of headroom in the process. And if you’re tall, that could be the difference between a comfortable ride and an annoying, headbanging torture trip.

2018 Infiniti Q60

Infiniti never has given up on the coupe. The G35 coupe was the vehicle that put Infiniti on the map, and its descendant, the 2018 Infiniti Q60, follows its trail. Part of the appeal of the Q60, beyond its beautiful exterior design, lively powertrain, and exquisite fit and finish, is a very generous amount of legroom for the tall driver. Headroom (without the moonroof) is okay.

The seats in Q60 are among the best you’ll find, offering extendable thigh support that long-legged tall folk will appreciate. Pricing starts at $39,950 for Q60 2.0t PURE, and goes up to $54,000 for the top-of-the-line Q60 Red Sport 400 AWD, which comes with a 400-hp 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged V6 engine.

2018 Lexus RC F

With the most front legroom of any coupe in our roundup, the 2018 Lexus RC F stands out as one of the best coupes for tall drivers. Starting at $65,675, RC F may have been eclipsed in the Lexus lineup by the arrival of the LC sports car, but it still is an amazing ride for drivers of any height.

It packs a fabulous 5.0-liter V8 engine (467 hp/389 lb-ft of torque) under its hood, good for a very un-Lexus-like 4.4 second run from 0 – 60 mph. Tall drivers may be willing to tolerate the moderately low roof while knowing that it helps the RC F achieve an aerodynamic drag coefficient of 0.33.

2018 Mercedes-Benz S 560 4MATIC Coupe

Mercedes-Benz’s flagship S-Class helps to define stealth. Tall drivers who want to slip into a coupe without attracting too much attention would be wise to consider the sleek and elegant 2018 Mercedes-Benz S 560 4MATIC Coupe, which balances good headroom with good legroom.

The S 560 Coupe has a menacing presence, reinforced by the throaty growl that emanates from its 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine (463 hp/516 lb-ft of torque). S 560’s nine-speed automatic transmission and 4MATIC all-wheel drive help propel the big coupe from 0 - 60 mph in 4.5 seconds, which means that the 4,734-lb vehicle generates a lot of momentum. Smaller drivers might look dwarfed in the driver’s seat of the big Mercedes, but a tall driver will be in command.
