MyLink System Coming to Chevy Sonic RS, Chevy Spark

Chevrolet’s innovative MyLink infotainment and connectivity system brings all the advanced capabilities of today’s smartphones to an automotive setting, and now the brand is bringing this technology to two more autos: As announced at the 2012 CES consumer electronics show, the Chevy Sonic RS and Chevy Spark will both be available with MyLink for the 2013 model year.

Chevy MyLink essentially gives drivers a new way to control all the media and functionality of their smartphones by using the system’s seven-inch color touchscreen. No-dial calling, online music streaming, personal phonebooks, mobile apps like Pandora and Stitcher Internet radio, and even photo galleries and movies can all be accessed via MyLink, although the latter two, of course, only when the vehicle is parked.

“The whole philosophy of MyLink is about letting our customers personalize how they bring information and music into their vehicles,” said Sara LeBlanc, GM global infotainment program manager. “Customers all over the world told us they’ve set up their smartphones exactly how they want them, and the ideal car radio should extend the capabilities of their smartphone rather than try to duplicate them.

“We listened to our customers and gave them a system that is safe, simple and connected.”

As a reminder, the Sonic RS and Spark are the two latest members of Chevy’s increasingly successful lineup, and are set to become part of a team that led the industry in passenger-car sales in 2011. The former is the hot-hatch version of the all-new Sonic, featuring a 138-hp turbocharged engine that is the only turbo in its class, along with go-fast/look-fast enhancements like:

• A lowered, performance tuned suspension

• Model-specific 17-inch five-spoke wheels

• An RS-only body kit that includes a revised grille, front and rear fascias, a rear spoiler, and redesigned fog lamps

• A racing-inspired flat-bottomed steering wheel

• Sport seats up front

• Aluminum sport pedals

• RS-only interior trim and accents

As for the Spark, it’s Chevy’s first entry into the city-car segment. Boasting a sporty design with touches like “hidden” exterior rear-door handles, ambient cabin lighting and a gauge cluster that draws its inspiration from those found on motorcycles, the Spark already has garnered numerous awards for its style—and safety—in markets around the world.

“Spark is for buyers who want much more than a ‘cute’ small car – they want a car that can be personalized, is dynamic and fashionable, and delivers a lot of value for the money,” said Chris Perry, vice president, global Chevrolet marketing and strategy. “Spark’s vibrant exterior and interior colors make a fashion statement, but it is also affordable, safe, maneuverable and very fuel-efficient.”

The MyLinked Sonic RS will hit the market in the fourth quarter of this year, with the Spark slated to arrive in dealerships this summer.
