Changes for the 2014 Chevrolet Malibu:
Though redesigned for 2013, the Malibu receives substantial changes for 2014. A new 2.5-liter 4-cylinder is standard for nearly all models, and is equipped with automatic stop/start technology to maximize fuel economy. The optional turbocharged engine is more powerful, and engineers have revised the steering, suspension, and transmission tuning to make the Malibu more enjoyable to drive.
Exterior styling is updated, and the Malibu receives redesigned seats, a new center console, and more rear seat legroom. While the trunk remains small at 13.2 cu.-ft. – less than the Chevy Cruze – the 2014 Malibu is available with new Side Blind Zone Alert and Rear Cross Traffic Alert systems.
Model Lineup:
The 2014 Malibu is sold in Base, LS, LT, Eco, and LTZ trim levels. The Malibu LS is equipped with 16-inch aluminum wheels and is priced just $235 higher than the Base model.
The Malibu LT adds a Chevrolet MyLink touchscreen radio with Bluetooth streaming audio, premium cloth seats, floor mats, ambient lighting, upgraded headlights, and heated exterior mirrors with integrated turn signal indicators. A 2LT option package adds 18-inch aluminum wheels, fog lights, dual-zone automatic climate control, a power driver’s seat, and remote engine starting.
The Malibu Eco model is equipped with light-electrification powertrain technology to boost fuel economy. Based on the Malibu LT, it adds active grille shutters, 17-inch lightweight aluminum wheels, and low-rolling resistance tires. A 2SA option package installs fog lights, a power driver’s seat, a premium sound system, a reversing camera, a universal garage door opener, and more.
Malibu LTZ models have heated leather seats, upscale trim, LED taillights, and unique 18-inch wheels. The 2LTZ option package adds a power sunroof.
Engines and Transmissions:
All Malibu models except the Eco are equipped with a new direct-injected, 196-horsepower, 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine with automatic stop/start technology. A turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder is optional for LT and LTZ models. It generates 259 horsepower and, for 2014, 14-percent more torque, now measuring 295 lb.-ft.
The Malibu Eco is a mild hybrid equipped with GM’s eAssist powertrain. The 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine, electric assist motor, and small lithium-ion battery make a total of 182 horsepower. Unlike most hybrids, the Malibu Eco cannot power itself on electricity alone.
Fuel Economy Ratings:
Chevrolet says the Malibu’s new 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine gets 23 mpg in the city and 35 mpg on the highway, which is almost as good as the Malibu Eco’s ratings of 25-city/36-highway. The turbocharged 4-cylinder is rated 21-city/30-highway.
Safety Ratings:
As this summary is written, the only National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) crash-test rating for the 2014 Malibu is 5-stars for frontal-impact performance. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) had not rated the 2014 as this summary was published.
