The 2015 Chevrolet Corvette naturally showcases a wide range of new technologies, but Chevy engineers also have gone ye olde extra mile to put some previous technologies to new uses, too.

For example, according to Harlan Charles, Corvette product manager: “The Performance Data Recorder was initially designed as a tool for track days, allowing drivers to record their laps and improve their driving skills.

"We soon realized the system could have many more applications, such as recording a scenic drive up Highway 101, or recording when the Valet Mode is activated."

As a result, all models of the 2015 Chevrolet Corvette will be able to reduce separation anxiety when owners have to give up the keys, with the new valet system able to lock the glove box and center-stack storage bin of the 2015 Chevrolet Corvette, disable its audio and infotainment features, and leverage the Performance Data Recorder to keep track of key vehicle systems. But not only will owners be able to see information about vehicle speed, engine rpm, g forces and more, they'll also be able to record high-def video and in-vehicle audio while the 2015 Chevrolet Corvette is being operated by valets—or anyone else.

Added Charles: "Think of it as a baby monitor for your car. Anyone who has felt apprehension about handing over their keys will appreciate the peace of mind of knowing exactly what happened while their baby was out of sight.”

As a reminder, the Performance Data Recorder for the 2015 Chevrolet Corvette is based on the same sort of data-acquisition and telemetry technology relied on by Corvette Racing and, in fact, was designed by the same company, the well-known engineering house of Cosworth. Among its highlights:

  • A 720p, high-def video camera, installed within the windshield header trim of the 2015 Chevrolet Corvette
  • In-car audio recording by a dedicated cabin microphone
  • Cosworth telemetry gear hardwired directly into the 2015 Chevrolet Corvette, complete with its own GPS receiver
  • An SD-card slot specifically for capturing video and vehicle data, located in the glove box of the 2015 Chevrolet Corvette
  • Multiple performance overlays, highlighted by settings for "Track Mode," "Sport Mode," "Touring Mode," and "Performance Mode"
  • "Cosworth Toolbox" software to help drivers analyze and learn from their data

Also adding numerous other upgrades for the new model year, the 2015 Chevrolet Corvette is due in dealerships in the near-term future.
